Default ECL codes for 1964

How do I decipher ECL codes for my 1964 coupe with AO Smith body? Or do they not apply to AOS bodies? I have one of the NCRS ECL Codes books and it doesn't seem to help, or perhaps I just don't know how to do it.

Thanks,
Rex

AO Smith trim tags do not have ECL codes only St Louis tags do.

I looked at that earlier today Frankie but it was no help.

I was thinking that I read that somewhere.

The only thing close to an ECL on an AO Smith that I've seen are the letters A or B. A indicates coupe while B is for convertible. That's all I've been able to find for my 65. Your year might be different. As Rumblegutz stated, many years had no ECL's.

It is my understanding that when AO Smith began building bodies in 64, they used Exception Control Letters (ECLs) on their Broadcast Sheets the same way St. Louis did. The difference is they usually only put 1 letter as the trim code suffix while St. Louis put both letters. In some cases, AO Smith did not add even the 1 letter as a trim suffix.

Rex, what is the ECL code you are trying to decipher? Post it and I'm sure one of us may be able to help. Bill

My trim code is STD black vinyl. No ECL codes on the tag.

Thanks,
Rex

I’ve been slowly dissecting my 65 and building a webpage with what I learn. Below is a link to it. If you scroll down to the 2nd set of pictures, you’ll see the trim tag on my 65 as well as everything I’ve been able to learn about it. Keep in mind that it is a 65 so it is very possible that your 64 will be different. Tons of articles state that AO Smith did not use ECL codes, but as can be seen in the link below that is incorrect. I’ve also found two other 65’s on the net with the identical “407 B” trim ECL. All of them had no AC, and no PW, but did have a radio, heater & defrost. From what I could tell, they had identical interior options as mine.

Std black vinyl did not come with ECL codes. My '67 is that same way. IIRC only the option interior colors/trim used ECL codes.
