67 Vette originality questions
Hey all,
I looked at a 67 327/300 convertible that the owner claimed was all original. Something that had me wondering-the air cleaner on the car was chrome with the exposed air filiter. I thought that Chevy only did that on the higher horsepower cars, no?
Also, any telltale signs to look for regarding whether paint is original or not? Thanks. Always learning.

Melting Slicks
Here's a pic of an installed '67 300HP air cleaner. Like Bill32 said, pull the top off and check to see if it's silk screened on the underside like an original. The Aluminum valve covers in the pic were not originally installed on a 300HP.
As for the paint, check the trim tag paint code to see if it's the original color. If it's a repaint, you might find paint or over-spray on parts that were installed after paint at the factory - like weatherstripping, door panel clips, grille braces, etc.

If you rub original paint with a little polish on a white cloth it will transfer some paint color. Most recent paint jobs are base coat/clear coat which will not transfer color because of the clear. If repainted with single stage urethane or an older repaint with lacquer then it may be tough to tell without consulting a painter although if the car wasn't completely disassembled you will probably be able to find some evidence of overspray or masking lines.

Interested if the OP can connect the dots for us. How a $50k sold at auction car, to what seemed to have been a buyer in Atlanta, is now the one he / she is interested in. If someone just bought it to flip it, and paid $50k for it, plus buyer premium, shipping, etc, they are in the hole already min of probably $55k. Unless the buyer at that auction reneged on the purchase and now it is for sale again in some way related to the estate.
The OP may want to be a little leary.. if it was purchased for $50k, and still not running at this time, the buyer may have discovered some fatal flaw (frame, bird cage, cracked block, etc) and is just looking to bail out.
Cheers - Jim

<= My '65 sold at Mecum Kissimmee in January 2013 for 39,900 (I presume plus fees), to a private party in central Florida, and wound up at a Chevy dealer down there in January 2014, where I bought it for $36K and change. The dealer had it listed for sale at $45K. Not only that, somebody had to put some cash into it between January 2013 and April 2014 when I bought it. It's a good looking ten footer but needs some work.
