This list was on the NCRS forum...
Nearly $1,000 bucks for a tag.....
I wonder what somebody would want one for...

I just put this list on the NCRS forum, but I may not have been the first to do so.

As for why, well, since repo tags can be detected, adding an original to a car that doesn't have one, or one that has a more desirable color...

I just added the interior and exterior colors to the list above

This is not uncommon - unfortunately.

Every marque is going through the same thing. Porsche 911 VIN plates are readily available.

Most of the major collectors will only pay money for cars that can be traced back to the original owner. They look for a documented provenance.

Matching numbers are no proof of provenance.

What all of this means is that distance between the collector Corvette and the hobbyist Corvette will widen. That may not be a bad thing.

You'll still be able to buy a Corvette that you can enjoy. It may not appreciate in value but most people don't care about that.

The few who care about collectibility are usually willing to may significant money.

So how is one to know if those tags are even original? Could not a seller just crank out some repops with correct data and try to sell them as originals for big bucks?

Not that I'm interested in buying, but I'd sure want to see some high resolution pics of these.......

Anything can be forged or counterfeited if the motivation/profit margin is high enough. It's been going on for centuries. The only way to tell for somewhat certain is to become an expert in whatever field you're questionable object belongs in.

The company/person who has been making repro trim tags for years makes tags that are easily detected.

You can detect them with your "bare eyeballs".

I suspect these came from wrecked cars over the years. There isn't much debate about these being original tags.

A friend has a 63 convertible with no trim tag and a VIN tag riveted in place.

Definitely a project car.
