63 brake problem
One of my rear brakes is locking up after the car sits for a few days. It rolls fine in reverse but when you go to first it is locked up/dragging. When I remove the hub everything looks fine. No rust inside drum, shoes look good, and no leaks. I then put the drum back on and readjust the brake and I am good to go for a drive. The emergency brake seems to be adjusted correctly because I can pull it while driving and it engages and then release it and drives normally. I do not get why it never locks up or drags in reverse but only when I go to first. Any ideas on whats wrong. It seems to be a strange problem and I would like to get it fixed. All help appreciated.

How old are your brake hoses? The first thing I usually look at, when dealing with a brake that's locking up, is a collapsing hose.

Could well be an over-cut drum.
Or, if its not a rubber hose its prob incorrect assembly, post pictures of the brake guts...
Leading, trailing shoe reversed, adjuster mounted backwards, spring over adjuster mounted backwards, slide points on backing plate damaged, sticky wheel cylinder..
Pics of both front brake guts would be good actually...

Good thought about the hose. Could that possibly cause it to bee free in reverse but dragging or locking up in first. It never sticks in reverse no matter how long between drives.

When you park the car for an extended period, are you setting the parking brake?

Turning the star adjuster until it frees up enough to where I can get it off. Never does get real loose but enough to get it off. This is a very strange problem and I do not understand why it never gets tight or locks up in reverse.

Frankie do you happen to have a picture that you can post of a correctly installed rear brake shoe assembly. I will take pictures of mine as soon as it locks up on me again.
Thanks

These are my 63 rear brakes; that now have about 10,000 trouble free miles on them...all NAPA parts..

The shoes are on properly - the silver parts are the self-adjusting mechanism. You must be careful assembling the self adjusters as the 'barrel and star wheel' are side specific; NAPA parts will have an "L" or "R" on the end of the star wheel threaded shaft.

I love NAPA parts. I used them all the time.
You really need a drum gauge. You can get them on Amazon.com
