Default 1961 cowl vent

Here is a DUMB question for fellow Members:

Was the 1961 Cowl Vent standard equipment or an option?

Reason for Question: My 61 does not have one! If it was standard equipment......the previous owner must have had leak problems and corrected it, prior to repainting in 1963.

It seems clear to me that that was the case....but I thought I would ask.

Actually, my interior is in extremely good shape other than the weather stripping which was completely incorrect. I'm starting to think the the previous owner had a real issue with leaks and obsessed about it.

Thanks!

dcamick

The cowl vent was standard on '61; leaks were standard on all C1s...

It certainly looks like the car in the picture has a cowl vent.

Maybe there are some replacement front ends that don't have the cowl vent; or somebody glassed over it.

The car in the picture has a cowl vent, maybe not operating, but its there.

The cowl vent was most assuredly standard on a '61... Is there a big radio **** chrome handle to the left of the center console ? If so, look under the dash and see what it attaches too...

No Cowl vent...must have removed and glassed over. All Badges were removed, and have been replaced including cove spears.

That car has been 'tweaked' quite a bit; it also has the earlier C1 chrome headlight rings, which requires moving the top fender windsplit stainless steel forward and glassing in the rear mounting holes. All correctable if you wish, but a PITA...

Frankly, I'd just drive it as is until time for a repaint then correct those things if desired.

Weirdly, its the ONLY other C1 that appears to match my one off bronze painted '61...

in your first picture the reflection of the windshield wipers makes it appear that there is a cowl vent. in the second picture it is obvious that there isn't one.

Also looks like windshield washers are missing; also standard equipment in '61....somebody really didn't like holes in the body apparently...

Look at your front CORVETTE script and note the heights closely of each letter; if the second "T" is slightly elevated its prob an original front end. People that put on a new nose usually get this wrong; sometimes horribly wrong (see pic)... Stevie Wonder Classic Auto Restoration...

Sun-gleam !!!! Haven't heard that name in years !!! I think I still have a couple quarts in blue. Beautiful, when the sun hits it, it just lights up. I sprayed my brothers 62 in it , mid 70's. Lacquer w/many coats of clear. Wish they still made it.

The cowl vent is totally useful in these cars...mine is open pretty much at all temperatures above 65 degrees. Impressive picture, Frankie. That's the first retro pin-up chick I've seen in a LONG time without tattoos. Very nice change of pace! Nothing tackier than tattoos on a gal.

I got roped into a photo session at a remote B-52 park near Orlando airport - a deal for a friend... You can see with the flags on the car it was 4th of July and steamy hot. I told the model twice not to sit her azz (nice at it was) on the hot fiberglass....I didn't have to tell her a third time!

As I've said before you aren't a real C1 driver until you've been driving along at 65mph and had an angry wasp get sucked down that cowl vent to buzz around Ballsackistan to the point you have to pull off the road and exit the car to protect your 'man parts'...

If you change the cowl vent gasket every 10 years or so, they don't leak.

Just a suggestion.

Too bad someone glassed the vent over.

It is an integral part of the ventilation in the car.

With the HT on, and both side windows down, and cowl vent open, you get a nice gentle breeze in the car, even at 90 MPH.

With the windows down and vent closed, you get a LOT of buffeting from the windows, such that it is real annoying and you want to raise teh windows, then it gets hot in the car.

Don't wear loose baggy shorts. Problem solved.
