So!!! Simple question...Is a reproduction Jack that is "For Sale" for a 1961 Corvette supposed to work? Or is it assumed, not stated, that it is for show only?

Help me with the Nightmare of buying a functional Jack for my 61.

It's a mechanical devise, it works or it doesn't! If it's "On Sale" on eBay, ask the seller to put in writing. Don't assume anything! If not, pass on it. Dennis

I don't know about the specific reproduction jack you are referring to, but the ones sold by most of the usual part houses, come with a disclaimer - something like "the manufacturer suggests this jack be used for show purposes only."

I believe I will be able to return this jack. The seller on Ebay does not even hint that you cannot use the jack for "jacking".

I'm sorry but, are there people out there that would spend 275 for a reproduction jack that is not usable?

If you want a serviceable scissors jack they are around for less than $50...

with Frankie, who in their right mind would produce a scissors jack today in the litigious society we have become? Who could afford the liability insurance?

When I bought my '63 (in 1969) I was just a college student and I used my original scissors jack dozens of times in the first year. It was already bent when I got it and by the time I stopped using it, even I recognized it was not a particularly safe jack to use. If it got to 3/4 of it's max extension it was always leaning in one direction or another.

If I were manufacturing that jack today, without re-engineering it, I would add a disclaimer too. Then of course it wouldn't look original either...

have one - have tested it - it works quite well even though the material is slightly thinner. My assumption in buying it was that the disclaimer for this particular jack was their to solve a potential liability issue (as you probably guessed).

The reproduction jack will work perfectly fine IF used to only lift one corner of your corvette AND you use it without half your brain tied behind your back i.e. Only jack your car on flat ground and block your car so it can't roll while you're jacking it up. Since almost no one will follow these simple rules when they have a flat tire today, the maker has to put a disclaimer in the product to not use it for what it's designed.

If you want a scissors jack to jack up your car, here's one that'll work great. I have one in my '62. Fits in the spare tire wheel. And the Corvette crank will work with this jack. If you paint it black, it'll look like the factory jack. I paid about $25 for mine. They may be more now. Lifetime warranty. Mine was made in the U.S., but they may be made in China now.

The repro jacks get you some NCRS judging points. Not 100%. But more than nothing. Is it worth it? That's for you to decide. Most people do a dollars per point evaluation strategy to decide. Depends on how bad you want that award.

One more thing. Are the repro jacks still available? All the usual Corvette vendors were out when I went looking in late 2015. I believe only one guy makes them.

Correct - If they said you could use it to jack the car up then they would be liable if something happened. Safer to say "don't use", than "use" Call AAA if you get a flat

I know a guy that paid $800 for a used '62 jack at the Florida Regional one year. He strutted around like a peacock for a couple days showing off his "prize".

I think that jack had much the same warning. It could be found in the owner's manual.
