Or you can read it and study it and then memorize the important info like I did in school when they told me to bring a book to class to read. The teachers were none to happy to see I read nothing but Corvette books

Even in the day, everyone knew what an "L88" was. Sounds like whining about the rest of the designations/numbers.
In a Chevrolet ad from 1956, Chevrolet refers to the engine as the 4.3-litre V8. In 1957, there are ads that respectively refer to both 4.6L and 283 ci. So it's not like Chevrolet didn't use the different measuring methodologies when it suited them.
The C3s is when the "L" nomenclature became common with the LT1 and the L82 - designations actually put on the hood of many of those vehicles.
