unbolt the idler arm from the frame and pull the steering linkage down.

that gives you enough room for the pan to go into place.

Assuming the motor's in the car, in addition, you will have any easier removal/install if you first rotate the motor so that the index line on the harmonic balancer is at the 5 o'clock position as viewed from the front of the car (counter weights on crank will then be on top giving you more clearance)
