I need rack and pinion suggestions
Hi all,
The '66 rebuild is going slowly. I am nearly finished rebuilding the front end. Hoping to have a rolling chassis this year.
I want to do R&P steering and have a few questions. First off, I am not sure whether I will do electric assist or power steering using a pump and fluid...If I buy a rack meant to be used with a pump and ps fluid but decide to do electric assist instead would the rack work?
My other question is, I have seen used racks from time to time. Anything I need to ask or look into before buying?
I'm looking at the Unisteer or the Flaming River R&P.
Thanks in advance

Which ever way you go, my guess is that you will be pleased. But if you are not, it is easily reversed. I put a Flamming River R&P in my '66 over 5 years ago. Next to my Vintage Air or the TKO600, I'd be hard pressed to say which was the best change. Here are a couple photos of my installation.

Thanks for the advice and pics. Your FR rack looks great!
I am thinking I could use a traditional rack which uses a pump as ps fluid. If I decide to make it electric I'll just put the lines in a loop then add ps fluid for lubrication.

Sounds like you are on your way now. Don't forget to post some photos when you're done.

Has anyone heard of having any problems with front-end wheel alignment after installing these rack and pinion systems? Specifically on a 62'

There was no problem installing the Flamming River R&P system on my car. My car is a 427 and has the same oil pan that was on the car that it had when I bought it in 1987. Is there any way to visually verify that my oil pan is not original to my car?

Well, after a bit of work I got my R&P installed.
I bought a used Steeroids kit, replaced the rack and bushings etc then installed it. Turned out really good and was an easy install.

Thanks, the rack is a GM from the late 80s to early 90s, pn 22-109 or 6449 depending on where you buy it.
The problem was the refurbisher does it as cheap as possible. The entire thing was painted black with the cheapest spray can paint you could buy, and with no prep work. I literally brushed the paint of with a wire brush...I could actually scrape it off with my fingernail.
But even after buying a new rack and other parts I saved a couple hundred so I'm happy. Now the front end is done, time to start on the rear.

Your earlier post said you got a flaming river rack. Not that it matters, but which one did you get?

I'm "planning" on doing electric assisted steering with the motor under the dash, we'll see.
