Default 1957 Wacky Tach question

Wacky action out of my 283/245 HP generator driven tach today. Works fine at idle to about 3000 rpm, then suddenly jumps to 6 o'clock position and makes a bunch of whirling noise for second or two, then back down to normal again. New gears at generator drive, and I pulled and inspected the cable-looks good. Relubed it as described in the posts in my forum search. Still same old stuff. Time to look at the tach? Something which I can inspect/rebuild, or off to an instrument repair shop?

Thnak,
Marc in Indy

The tach mechanism is worn out and needs to be replaced.

Been there, seen that.....
