Guys, thanks for all the info and help. Picked up 2 springs from a nice fellow really into GM this evening not 5 miles from my house! Now that is real help.

He had a pristine 61 Vette, 61 Impala 348 bubble top and 61 Impala 348 convertible. All red. AND 2 SPRINGS!

Never heard of brake shoe springs going bad in my many decades of the hobby. Spring steel is pretty hard to defeat. An average set lasts a lifetime so a couple of hours of braking with metallic linings defeats this ?? I think this train of thought belongs with the " its a 350 four barrel that put out 750 hp on high octane fuel " sales pitch. 24 hours of road racing, maybe. Normal usage like the poster, never in a million years. I bet red calipers dissipate heat better than unpainted varieties.

Actually black ones dissipate heat better, if the paint film isn't too thick. It's physics.
Springs loosing temper. It's metallurgy.

Now that this is behind us. It raises a question. All these springs and colors. There must be a reason. Any one have a key to the code of colors? For instance, what color should the springs be on the J65? How about the J56 and the standard brakes???

Here is the information for the 1963 Z-06 and 1964 J-56 springs. However.................it is my understanding that all springs were not always painted.

Critique? I know the spreader spring tab needs to move to the outside and the primary spring is not attached. Isn't there supposed to be some rubber "hose" on the parking brake cable? Anyone have a pic. so I can see and then find it?
Also, is the adjusting spring light green rather than black?

Got the drums all nice and clean and brings up another question of fact. I keep seeing repeated that the drum castings are the same with metallic and standard drums. Those who have metallic drums, what casting numbers do you have?

I think the casting number is the same for drums for both standard and metallic lining.

The only difference is the web thickness. (the dish portion) The web for metallic lining drums is about .010"-.015" thicker than for standard drums.

Also, the machining is different for metallic lining.

+1, BTW pop23235, where did you get the shoes? Are they rebuilt, and if so, what are the pucks made of? Any pictures of them?

I can send or post pictures. They are GM Service counter. I purchased them about 1974 or so. My friendly parts manager had them on the shelf for a long time as a mis-ordered part and I picked them up for 1974 dealer cost as best I recall. Tell me what pic you want.

If you ordered the shoes in 1974, they would be the correct original design. Original numbers are 3794191 and 3794194 but I don't remember which is front and which is rear.

In about 1982, there was a mistake in the price of metallic rear shoes and they were dealer trade price of about $16. a set. I ordered and received several sets. A few months later, the price went beck to what it was prior to the mistake.

Looks like they've gotten a bit more expensive than they were in 1963.
