OK....................here is what I have......................the parts book is an original Chevy dealer book dated Oct. 1, 1965. Sorry but I have only the secondary, rear pull back springs.

I think return springs for standard lining would work as long as you're not racing or heavy on brake application from high speed. They're the same dimensionally but I think the material changed.
Also, by the early/mid 70's, GM released a brake spring kit that was shown for standard lining and metallic brakes. One kit serviced both. I have to guess that the set contains springs designed for the metallic shoes but that would also work for standard shoes. That way, one part number could service both.
I don't know if the part number is still available from GM but, if not, it would be much easier to find than the original individual springs. The part number for the kit is 3981988. One part number services one wheel and should contain all the springs for that wheel.

Thanks Critter. Back in the day, around 74, I bought springs from GM (probably weren't the correct ones since they were disc.) and installed them. If you've noticed and followed my posts, you may know I'm re-restoring this 64 that has 0 road miles since, but lots in the back of moving vans. When disassembling those "new" springs, one or more broke! So I figure if I gotta replace them, why not search out the real ones. If not, your solution is correct.

Also part # 3981988. Don't know if it's a replacement or renumbered part number. Need qty of 4 kits.
This is likely what I ordered and installed since I'm working out of the same parts book I had back then :-)

Parts book note says each part content does one wheel?????

I know I ordered four of these kits in about 1976 and I remember seeing the different color.

The springs hold the linings back from contact. They have nothing to do with the amount of pressure the cylinder exerts on the lining to drum. With that in mind, ..... why would there be a difference ? In the 60s when they ran 24 hour races with drum brakes temps might have affected the springs but not to the point of complete failure. If color coding helps, PPG is your friend.

No one here said that the springs had anything to do with the pressure exerted on the shoe.
