Payment of sale item
I have a part listed here for sale and someone wanted to pay me via PayPal. Can someone tell how that works if you don't have a bank account attached to your PayPal account? I only have a credit card. Sorry I know it is a stupid question but I have googled it and can't find an answer if there is a way to receive and not give them my bank account number.

No worries. You can receive a payment, you will be charged approximately 3.5% fee, the money will stay in your account until you use it to purchase something, or you can have PayPal send you a check for your balance. I have not and will not link PayPal to any bank account.

If you use the friends and family member option, they won't charge a fee.

Pay Pal
You can receive payment to your PP account without involving a bank account.
You can later transfer the money to your bank account or use it to pay for something you buy.

You cannot dispute money sent using Paypal Friends and Family -- your choice.
You're essentially 'gifting' the money to the person, not purchasing goods or services...
If you get a messed up car part, or, none at all - you're out of luck...
Since you're selling you may not care, a smart buyer of an expensive part might...

PayPal fees are high, plus the back door (friends and family) protects the seller only. Not a fan, but sometimes have no choice.
I usually send a personal check (haven't bounced one since I was a poor and stupid student over 40 years ago), and advise the seller to not ship until the check clears. I'm never in so much of a hurry.
YMMV

I have a credit card listed on my PP account too, but I use it as a secondary source.
Makes things MUCH easier with the bank account linked. Me thinks you worry too much.

My bank account is linked too...
I do 'cash and carry' at this point to the max. I may charge some things but not much and never if I can avoid it...

But we all know that - and now you've gone and posted it publicly
The wife asked to use my Paypal account to run her jewelry side business - I said not just no but HELL no. That is my Corvette and gun money laundering machine.
That expensive part off eBay to fix the washing machine that was starting to "sound funny" ? Its an original '63 shifter console.. That top-of-the-line leaf blower I was forced to buy after ours mysteriously broke ? Its a nice date-coded alternator...

The main thing is get the money out quick as you can into your bank account. You can open a paypal account then request funds (send an invoice) to the person who wants to buy the item. You can add the tracking information for them.
It will put a few cents into your bank account once you have the routing number and checking/savings account number set up. From there send the invoice and soon check back to make sure there is a balance. Once there is a balance send out the item.
That's the key point! Do not ship until you see that balance. Then transfer funds into your savings/checking account.
Pretty easy and convenient. If you had a smartphone then even better because you can do more...
Also, there is a paypal debit/credit card which is nice if you do more than a few transactions a year.

FWIW... I've had my PayPal account linked to my bank account for over 15 years, and have never had a problem.
I have a credit card listed on my PP account too, but I use it as a secondary source.

I have a separate checking account for Paypal. I go on line and transfer enough money into that account from my other account to cover my purchase for that deal. On-line transfer is immediate and works for me. If I take a payment via Paypal I leave it in for my next purchase unless it gets over a reasonable amount, which it never has for me.

I bought a rather pricey part for an AR-15 rifle and it was defective. Seller gave me a song and dance about it.
I filed a Paypal dispute that eventually resolved the issue. I'm very satisfied with the service....

I also agree ... Paypal is solid! I've had my bank account and 2 credit cards (US$ and Cdn$) linked to it for years and never had a problem. Over the years I've had the odd item I bought from China never arrive, but the dispute process works well as Frankie said to sort any issues out that might arise.
