Default Cylinder Heads Installation Question

Greetings. So I just had a bunch of work done on my '65 at a local shop. Most of the work was on the suspension, tires, and wheels, but I did have these new cylinder heads installed as well. Are the gaps/holes above the exhaust headers normal? I have to take her back up there for some timing and/or valve adjustments to get rid of some backfires, but I wanted to reach out here to see if these new heads were installed properly. Do I need new headers, gaskets, or something else, or are these spaces OK? Thanks.

I don't even care what the topic is John. It's genuinely great to see you posting!

What kind of heads did they put on. It looks like the exhaust ports don't line up with your headers

BluePrint Engines H2008K

The heads they replaced were double hump fuelie heads (3782461), which these should be a direct replacement for.

Take a look at the pictures of the heads on the company's website. Those gaps aren't the exhaust ports, but i don't know if they should even be exposed?

If these are the heads they installed, and unless you are seeing or hearing any exhaust leaks, I think your heads are fine. I've never seen these (red boxes) cast in a cylinder head, but again if there are no leaks, you should be good.

Good luck... GUSTO

next time around consider spark plug boots with 90 deg angle if those burn up

Good point. I need to get new plugs anyway, so I'll rewire the ends of these wires.

Also, I have more information. Those 'gaps' are actually holes for mounting spark plug wires. My headers flanges are too big to use them (partially covering), but this is a non-issue. Thanks to everyone for their responses!

Once you get your problems sorted out let us know what you think about these heads. At $895 a pair assembled,
this is something that I would be very interested in.

Your distributor looks like it not phased correctly. The vacuum can should be in the 4-5 o'clock position. It may be tied to your backfireing problem. The intake manifold is designed for mid to upper rpm engine operation range coupled with low gears such as 3:70 or higher as opposed to a dual plane intake that is good for 3:55 and lower. Talk to the shop. Check the clearance between the upper rad hose and the alternator belt. A cut hose will sideline you real quick. Dennis

I've only worked on about a gazillion small-blocks in the last 60 years, but I've never seen a small-block head with holes cast in it like those in your photo; is this something new?

check that vacuum advance, backfire will pop it pretty easy. also distributor not indexed correct as previously mentioned. These heads take 3/4 reach plugs, surely they installed correct new plugs?
