Default Transmission Tunnel

So I've been restoring the engine compartment the last week or so and now I'm into the transmission tunnel area. I noticed the paint from the engine compartment area only goes back into the transmission tunnel area about 12 inches and I'm wondering if that how it's supposed to be. I figured it went all the way back behind the shifter area but it doesn't look like mine ever did. Anyone have any idea how far I need to go back into the tunnel with paint ?

Anything into the tunnel or floor board under the toe kick would be over spray and serve no purpose to GM bean counters

Here's a pic of that area on a '63 coupe I had about 10 years ago. Pulled the engine for a rebuild and cleaned the engine compartment, firewall, and underside:

thanks.i will be sliding the engine forward to get the throttle swivel off and clean and paint the firewall in the next little while [when it warms up a tad] lol......john b
