Default Can Delco PF141?

Can these still be purchased? I just need the filter. I think the canister is original.

Just be sure to read some here about changing the filter. It requires a bit more diligence than a spin on filter.

Frankie:

Don't make it sound so hard. Most of us successfully changed these filters when we were 16-18 years old. This filter replacement is not difficult.

Now.....replacing the AC evaporator coil in a mid-year factory air car requires some diligence. Changing the oil filter , not so much.

, It's not that hard but, Frankie makes a good point ie, check to see if any old "O" rings are seated up in the block, (some have found up to 3) next, it's good idea to fill canister prior to installation and lastly, when the lip of the canister begins to touch the O ring one should push up on the canister while tightening the bolt as to not tear into the O ring and, to get a good seat.

As mentioned, not hard but, a bit more involved than just wiping a bit of oil on and spinning on a disposable canister.

YA and you have to look carefully for the o rings (a good bright light helps) and remove it with a pick. They can be compressed in that seal groove so tight it looks like there isn't one in there. Pick until you hit steel. Best to coat the new replacement seal with some grease prior to placement to assist sealing.

It's not hard to change this filter. Messy. But not too difficult. It can be a little fussy to get the canister to seal. Make sure it doesn't leak after you start the car.

There's a few manufacturers that make this filter. Many people like the quality of Baldwin filters (P18 and P18HD). If your FLAPS doesn't carry Baldwin, truck or marine places will.

Yeah - well the guy that "knew what he was doing" and showed me how to change the canister filter on my 61 resulted in 4-1/2 quarts of oil on Hwy 50 in Central Florida and I was lucky to save my engine.

So, I'll just keep on warning people to take some extra care Larry...

WIX makes a fine filter...you HAVE to ensure that the old gasket is removed...I use a strong flashlight and a dental pic. The new gasket is square (not round) and seats into the groove snugly and then you can tighten the oil canister up into it. After installation I usually take an index card or narrow bondo spreader and push it completely upward ALL the way around the top of the canister and ensure the canister is tightened against the gasket and not hung up on the engine block.

Think Amazon. $5.99

My local Advance store no longer carries the early filter.

other than 'originality', I see no good reason to use the archaic canister filter; spin-ons filter at least as well and are easier to use.

Your FLAPS will have the Mr. Gasket 1270 spin on adapter for converting to conventional filter - but that wasn't the question...

I'd like to stand several feet away and watch someone fill a cannister then install it.

It's not a problem unless you fill it too full.

I used to fill the cannister a long time ago. I quit. Didn't see the need.

How did you keep oil from running out around the bolt and washer while you were filling and installing the cannister?
