Default Question - Exhaust manifold size

I'm planning to add factory side exhaust and am confused about the measurements I see for exhaust manifolds - 2" or 2 1/2"

(Running 1970 LT1 - in 64 vert with cheap shorty headers - not sure of the specs - I need to figure out if they are for 2.5" pipes or 2" pipes)

Does this measurement refer to the inner diameter of the header collector? E.g., the hole?

It looks like the 2.5" pipes reduce down to 2" I think. But I don't know if that is inside or outside diameter.

I'm probably going to go with aluminized original sound pipes - not sure what brand yet - Sweet Thunder seems to be well liked.

But WTF is everybody measuring?

The measurement refers to the inside diameter at the bottom outlet of the exhaust manifold collector.

This

Look at a few ram's horn exhaust manifolds in both 2" and 2 1/2" and the difference will become obvious upon sighting.

Aha. My shorties are 2.5" I.D.

I suppose that means, I need 2.5" pipes. Now, which brand.

Another question is- are there any repop covers to avoid? Or are they all made by the same company and similar in quality?

I'm thinking of just getting a set from Zip. But the Sweet Thunder originals seem like they are well received albeit loud (which is fine by me - I enjoy down shifting on the freeway and scaring old ladies and young children.)

I think there is two manufactures of the covers. Corvette specialties of MD west has the best one on the market

Right on. I seemed to remember there was difference. Thx.

I think I'm going with Allen's pipes. They make them with 2.5" collectors that match right up to the headers. None of that adapter BS.

Still need to save my pennies. But I'll get there. I've wanted that exhaust since I was a kid. I've had side exhaust but not factory style. Those things are perfectly designed for this car.

I think that's why I love the midyears so much. They are a perfect visual design. Each part visually integrates - from the grill to the side pipes to the bumpers - it's just RIGHT.

The purchase of an older coupe with a new set of factory side pipes is definitely a plus. I probably should leave them on and contend with the volume of " music ".
