How to fix 4 speed shifter rattle?????????
Anybody got any tips on getting rid of the rattle that I hear coming from my 1965 shifter/reverse housing etc. I know I can get a major or minor rebuild kit from C Central which includes new ***,reverse housing, bushings and assosciated other guts of the shifter. Will this fix the annoying rattle? Or is their a simpler way.

I am not sure you can ever get rid of it 100%.
Some will say buy a Hurst, But I prefer a stocker in good cond.
(Something else I am not sure everyone has experienced, one in good cond)
As I mentioned, you can get them close, but am not sure if you will get
them to be 100% rattle free at all {speeds & rpm range}.(poor design IMHO)
Maybe those who bought these cars new can let us know?
(yes I have a "slight" rattle at higher speeds, have trained my right knee
to rest on it, or leave my hand on it while cruising.
Sorry I could not give you the answer you were looking for.
Maybe someone else has found the 100% cure?

If you're not already aware of it, some vendors offer an "anti-rattle" spring and bracket for T-10 shifters, but even that will probably not completely eliminate shifter buzz. Dr Rebuild lists these parts in their catalog.
Woops, just noticed you have a Muncie, and the parts I mentioned are not for that shifter.

I am pretty sure that Corvette Fever did an article a while back on rebuilding shifters. The parts came from ZIP, I think. Both have web sites and ZIP does a lot of "how to" stuff on their site. You are essentially replacing the nylon sleaves between the shifting parts. Fairly simple job, just a little dirty and knuckle busting.

Re: How to fix 4 speed shifter rattle????????? (GaryS)
Ive taken the "buzz/rattle" out of several '64-'65 levers, where it was caused by the outer chrome sleeve rattling/buzzing against the main lever. Remove the **** and spring, then the chrome sleeve, and you'll see two white plastic bushings on the lever; these are usually worn, and allow the sleeve to rattle. If you don't have new bushings, wrap them with a turn or two of electrical tape and trial-fit the sleeve until it still moves up and down, but doesn't rattle laterally. Then get an O-ring slightly smaller than the diameter of the lever just above the step where the bottom of the sleeve rests, and install it there. Then install the chrome sleeve, spring, and ****; the tape wrap will stop the buzz, and the O-ring will stop the rattle where the bottom of the sleeve meets the step on the lever.

Got a Hurst on mine, was there when I got it. Never did rattle, in fact I didn't know of the problem 'til I came on the forum. Conclusion; get a Hurst shifter.

Sorry, but I have to chime in here. Those stock shifters wern't any good when they were new so............put a hurst in and if you want it to look original buy the "T" handle they sell for it. If your going to drive it a lot you'll be glad you did.

Thanks, I was curious what they were like when new.
Have installed 1/2 dozen hurst shifters my own cars
through the years (mainly top loaders), and a B&M ratchet shifter or two,
but never bought a mid year brand new.
Still prefer the stocker in the short throw position. Dont ask me why , I just do. :D

I spent a several years with two GM shifters, completely rebuilding them with GM parts, then adding custom bushings washers and springs - to no avail. I have an A-C car, and the A-C (compressor vibration and added under floor heat) would always exacerbate the buzzing. It all went away about seven years ago when I found an old Hurst. As a bonus, you never worry about the shifter leaving your car in two gears at the same time.

Hurst. Period. Get a "look-alike handle" and let the public look in and decide....... :D
After about 3 rebuilds including new bushings and the tape technique, I lay the original to rest in a box for the next caretaker...

I guess I have to buck the popular majority. I rebuilt mine this last summer just before Reno's" Hot August Nights" About 500 miles from PDX .
Before the rebuild mine rattled at 70mph and so far after the rebuild I have hit tripple didgets once or twice :bb with no sound at all, How long the shifter Gods will smile on me I don't know. GL

Have a Hurst in my '64, and it still rattles some. But then I think that wereas '64s attach to the tranny, don't '65s attach to the chassis?

I believe the chassis mount started in late 66, but my car has the trans mount for stiffness. With chassis mount, engine torque will try to pull the linkage unless you use solid motor mounts.

Replace entire shifter or just handle with Hurst
1) just the handle for about $90
2) the entire shift assembly for about $440
I assume replacing just the handle won't be enough to stop the rattling, or will it?

C2 of the Year Finalist - Modified 2020
Welcome to the CF. I may have been better for you to start a new thread instead of tagging onto a 12 yr old one, but I will respond. What year is your car and what is your driving/use style? If you must have it all correct/stock, the shifter can be rebuilt, but it may still rattle at some point. If you don't mind a thing or two being non-stock, put a Hurst Competition Plus in with the straight handle. Dennis
