Ok .........Who Knows this one..

What is the Factory Bolt Grade Rating on the 4 Bolts That Hold the Rear Spring on ...(1965 C2) to the Diff??? Grade 5 Or Garde 8? My spring is an after market and is 2..5/8 inches thick. Got me some Grade 8....4 inch bolts (2) only. And 4 grade 5.


Now heres the RUB... :banghead: ...the 2.........4inch grade 8's look like they will only grabe about 1/2 inch of thread in the diff holes.. I could only locate tonight grade 5...4-1/2 incher's. I'll try tomorrow to get grade 8, but can I use grade 5 if I can't find grade 8?

It looks like the 3..1/2 incher's won't grab enough threads. :banghead:
How much compression will the rubber between the spring move in??

It figures that this is the last thing I have to do before I drop the car to the ground.. Now a bolt is holding me up. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

The GM parts book doesn't say, but Paragon's replacements are grade 8, and grade 8's are what are on mine.
I would not be afraid to use grade 5's myself.

VNV You mean Bubba's Warehouse (Lowe's/HomeDepot) didn't have any long enough. I usually find they have a great selection of Grade 8 Bolts etc to bad they are Zinc plated. Dave...

Heh Dave.... Home Depot has the right lenth but grade 5 only... Haven't checked Lowes yet..

Mine are original and only have a vendor mark on them - no radial lines so they may be only grade 3. The torque spec is 55-75 and the only load on them is the clamping load to keep the spring in place - no dynamic loading since the spring reaction force where it mounts to the diff is always up.

Grade 5 should be perfectly adequate.

Well I just needed a break...Got the spring in..It was a 50/50 mix of bolt grades 2 Grade 8 to the rear...2 grade 5 facincig the front. Now I'm ready to mount the KO Hubs and put the tires on and drop the car and tighten the spring bolts to the final torque.

I should of had my lady fried come over and do this job... She's always on the PAD...and uses my credit cards!!!! But the last time she helped me was when I tried to lub my speedo cable and she ended up with a 2 lb blob of chassie grease all over her face and chest after my ingenious plastic hose tube attachment to the grease gun exploded!!!.... :lol:
