"I know with aircraft, I can start with a Cessna 172 data plate, build a 172 from parts and have it licensed (after numerous FAA inspections). It will be a Cessna 172 for which Cessna is liable if anything occurs later.
When I lived in AK, it was not uncommon for people to go to great lengths to salvage a vin tag off of wrecked aircraft. People would cruise the mountians in helicopters, etc. They would just take the vin tag off the wrecked A/C.
They would then put a plane together from parts or salvaged parts from other aircraft and then title it with the newly found VIN.
