Re: Cobra Kit Car (JPatrick)
Yup, they're fun - I've built three of them (an E.R.A. and two Uniques) - here's one of the Uniques at the Cobrafest at Talladega:

Re: Cobra Kit Car (JohnZ)
JohnZ,
what would be the total cost to build a Cobra kit car with 427 5 speed??? How many manhours to build the typical kit???
Just curious, because most kit companies do not get specific aout total cost.
I watched the discovery channel show "A Car is Born" where the presenter built a cobra kit car throught the TV series. It looks to be a fullfilling hobby.
Cheers,

Check out http://www.clubcobra.com for everything you could ever possibly want to know about Cobras and a pretty good group of guys as well.
My current Cobra lust...stainless and aluminum...WOW!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2429677765
I have not built one myself, though I feel I have spent enough time talking with people/reading/drooling to quote a rough range:
Factory Five - $20K-25K+ depending on parts/donor/new e.t.c.
Superformance - $50K
ERA - $45-50K with a 428 to $100K depending on detail, motor.
CSX (glass) - Was $80K for glass car 2 weeks ago before Shelby Announced a new car from South Africa - claiming to have a roller price of $39.9K to start, with the final price being around $44K aka a 55-$60K car
CSX (Aluminum) $100K +
CSX (Carbon/composite body) TBD
Kirkham - $52K roller for around a $70-80K car with a mild 427 + depending on motor, finish, options
I am not too familiar with Uniques/Butlers e.t.c. Good luck!

Re: Cobra Kit Car (a63vette)
Has been my favorite car since I can remember. Bid on a real 65 427 yrs ago, didnt get it though. Really would like a Alum bodied 289 now.
But around here, they are about as common as C5's :lolg:
Sorta took the fun out of it, as there are so many around now.
But know one can deny their performance.
On the other hand, maybe a side oiler is the way to go?
Still got a scar on my left leg from adjusting the carbs on my neighbors
side oiler kit car.
Forget it. Make it a GT40.
(From what I know about kit Cobras, its cheaper to buy one 2nd - 3rd hand from a private party, already built, but more fun to build on your own.)

Re: Cobra Kit Car (kenmo)
I just went to a cruise night with a friend who just completed one. It is a Lone Star from Texas kit. His kit cost approx. $30,000 without engine and paint.
He put about another $10,000 in the car. It took him just over 1 1/2 years to complete.
The car looks awesome and he couldn't believe the attention it recieved.
Those header side pipes sound so great!!

Been looking at doing one for a while... Definitely want aluminum! There was a company in the Ukraine (or some former Soviet) that was producing aluminum bodies using the aircraft tooling for Migs... Can't remember the name. Throw in a Shelby 427, and have pretty close to the real thing!

I built all three of mine with 358 Windsors with Yates heads - almost 200# lighter on the front end than an FE big-block, much better handling cars. The Windsors were 430-450hp, which is plenty exciting in a 2300# car. I had about $40-$45K in each of mine, not counting about 800 hours each of my own labor. I'm a perfectionist engineer, selected the E.R.A. and Unique because they are the only ones out there with the correct body shape and proportions (besides the Shelby), and finished/detailed each one as faithfully as possible to the original cars. Had lots of fun with them, and got my money out of them when I sold them. You're not likely to get your money out of the less-expensive kits with the wrong body shape, solid rear axles, Mustang donor parts, etc. - the more authentic to the original they're built and detailed, the more they're worth. There were 38 of them on display from the Detroit area Cobra Club at the Woodward Cruise.

This past Wednsday at the weekly cruz there was a beautiful blue Cobra kit car, with a real 63 1/2 427 ci 425 hp Ford "R" motor with matching toploader 4 speed.... The ownder paid $25K for the motor and tranny.....   and another $15K for the four beautiful webbers that sat on top of it....   Guess the C1/C2 hobby is not the only expensive one.... :yesnod:

Re: Cobra Kit Car (1970 Stingray)
We plan on one of them for my wife after I'm done building my Grand Sport replica. From what I've seen, I think the Superformance car is the way to go. They even have an all aluminum option now but they're extremely pricey. I believe they are still made by AC. Otherwise the complete rolling body & chassies complete and painted is around $36K. Expect another 15K for a decent 500+ hp 427 & transmission.

If you are interested in Cobra kit cars, check out http://www.cobracountry.com
Curt Scott is a kind of watchdog in the kit car industry. He has a book out that reviews the different manufacturers. He tells it like it is and that sometimes makes enemies. I too have always wanted to build one but if you check out the for sale section, everyone is losing their azz when they try to sell them. It sure would be fun though.
