What's a good replacement Carb for a 65 327/350?
I bought my 65 350 with an unoriginal (70s I think) Holley. For a couple of reasons I want to replace it but I need a carburetor primer.
Vacuum or mechanical secondary (is there a a vacuum w/ a double pump?)
600 -vs- 670 CFM ( it's all original under the carb)
I would love to hear from anyone who has swapped out the original for a modern replacement or anyone who knows where I can find an original.
-Can anyone guess how overcarbing with 670CFM (Holly Street Avenger is $100< than amore direct replacement and comes with a choke.
here are the two my uneducated brain is thinking about...
most original? http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...C/0-4776C.html
most modern? http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...C/0-80670.html

Forget the double-pumper - you want vacuum secondaries. The Avenger won't fit under your air cleaner due to the long center-hung float bowls, and you'd have to make up a new pump-to-carb line to feed the dual bowls (otherwise, good carb, and they come as a 570 as well).
Jeg's has Holley 1850's (600CFM) that are a good bolt-on replacement with the short single-inlet side-hung bowls(manual choke, just buy an electric choke kit with it), and they also have the Holley reproduction of the 3367 that was used on 66's, but it's more expensive.
A 600 will work fine - the original carb (2818) was 585CFM.

I found a rebuilt/restored 2818 on eBay a while back for $260.
Someone had placed a 750cfm on my motor, and it was running horribly.
I suggest to check eBay, as they always seem to have some for sale.

I'd hunt down a correct 65 350 HP Carb, rebuilts are out there. eveything will fit up, choke, etc.... no make-it-fit/work gizmos.
ain't it worth a couple bucks to do it right? and if you ever want to sell the car, odds are a correct carb will be appreciated.
unless your trying to go for significantly more power, I vote for leaving them the way they were designed. :seeya

I'd love to find a 2218 but haven't been able to pin one down. Right now It has a 3268 (yes 68, not 67) and I cant find that number on the Holley web site so can't find parts. I need a choke and a rebuild kit real soon. I think a replacement is better that throwing money at this one.
Your'e right about looking for that 2218. I wont give up, just dont want to park and wait. :auto:

"Just re-read orig post"
(At 1st I missed your point by a mile) :banghead:
I bought this carb "new" for my 65 365.
I would try and find an orig, or "new" model of this
Holley, even if they did quit building them recently
there should still be a few around.

The 2818 was available new from Holley up until the last few years. Some speed shop Holley dealers may have a new one left in stock. Of course the service carbs are all dated after 1965.
The last "restored" 2818 I saw on eBay sold for $440. I could see in the photos that it had fuel bowls and a baseplate from a different carb. No telling what metering blocks and internal parts it had. This auction price was a real puzzler to me because I have one new 2818, still in the Holley box. I tried to sell it for Holley's last price when it was available, $600. The carb buyers who inquired thought that was too much, so I'm going to put it on eBay with no reserve in the future.
By the way, your 3268 Holley was originally installed by GM on a 325hp '66 Chevelle SS396. You would think these carbs would be in high demand by Chevelle restorers, but I don't think they pay as much as Corvette people.

Thanks to all of you for the replies and information.
Jerry, if you have a new 2818 you'd like to sell please send me some info, I'd might be intrested. Also thanks for the heads up on the 3268. I keep my ears open for someone who might need one.

I just put a Holley 3367 on my stock 67 327/350. It runs like a top out of the box, once I set the idle mixture and speed. This carb was stock on 66 327/350 engine and it has externally adjustable floats. The stock 327 carb for 67 had floats that could only be adjusted by taking off the float bowls, a service pain. Whatever carb you buy, I would not go above 600 cfm, since the stock flow was 585 cfm. I just took off a 600 cfm Demon Jr. that ran terribly, so would not buy one of those again. A stock 65 carb would be your best bet, since it would be jetted properly, have the right power valve, choke hookup, etc.

:iagree: Yes, I was watching your thread with interest. I’ll stay away from the Demons. Congratulations on the new carburetor. I’d love to go original but haven’t found one and I need a replacement. I’ll keep looking but Holly has some good replacements pieces in the mean time.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Re: What's a good replacement Carb for a 65 327/350? (guycummins)
Don't put too much stock into anyone that says a 670cfm carb is 'overcarbing' a L-79... I've got a factory correct '67 327/350hp w/ the original carb. It's always run well (no complaints) with the stock carb, but I stuck an out of the box holley 750 double pumper on it when I had the stocker sent to holley for replating & a rebuild - all I can say is WOW! I loved the way the car drove with the 750 DP. There were no downsides to the swap (except that I had to have a new hard line made from the pump to the carb), and it was an absolute joy to drive.
Anyway, the original vac sec. holley has been back on for a year now, but it just doesn't seem to have the same 'zip' as it did with the double pumper... and nowhere near the same top end. The more I think about it, the more I want to box up the original and stick the 750 DP back on.

Did you have any problem with the stock air cleaner sticking up too high and hitting the hood on the 750dp? I have a 65 327/350hp and am thinking of doing the same.

The Holley 3367 is the only stock mid-year 4-barrel still available new. Jeg's sells them for about $420 including shipping. This is a nice carburetor for old Corvette 327 engines if you can hook up a divorced choke set-up.

I saw a NOS 2818 (dated early 80's) sell on EBAY for $280 about 4 months ago. I missed the boat and ened up paying $230 for one that needs somw work. I started taking it apart last night. In the month or so that I watched EBAY there were 5 or 6 that sold.
Be sure to search several different ways:
"corvette holley"
"holley 2818"
"corvette carburetor"
Here's what it looked like last night -- yes, it's a service carb and yes someone's screwed around with it as I found 60 jets in the primaries and 65 in the secondaries. Should be 65 in the primaries and 75 in the secondaries.
Buyer beware and good luck.

I was in the same boat as the original poster - my 65 with 54,000 miles somehow got seperataed from its 2818 Holley along the way, has a Holley "Street Avenger" something or other on there now, runs well enough but I suspect I would prefer the way it was orignally set up to run, with the oem carb for the L76 SHP engine. So I went about looking of rhte 2818 too - like allcouped up says, you'll miss a few on ebay of ya just search 2818, try his other variations, I got one for around $200 that was listed a High horse 66 vette carb, although it was missing the choke assembly. Sent it out for a noce resto, and just came in last night:
http://home.hpphoto.com/servlet/Link...fa4299&size=lg
(only a weird car guy would immediately think to snap a photo of his new resto-ed carb!)
anyway, DON'T give up! they are out there, although it seems to me that the 2818 carb prices on ebay have gotten a little nuts of late, also try a Google on 2818 Holley and you'l find Rowley selling them and others too. (This guy does too: http://customrebuiltcarbs.com - and he is the one who resto-ed my 2818, looks even better than the pictures)
The real trick, if you are into it, is finding the proper dated-coded 2818 for your car's/engine's assembly date - although they re-stamp carbs now too it seems! (I did not find the correct date-coded 2818, by the way, but still have my eyes open if one should appear).
anyone want a Holley street Avenger carb that works pretty well on an L76?
