Default keisler 5 sp conversion

I would like to hear feom someone who has installed the Keisler Tremec in a mid year. I tried a forte tremec 2 or 3 years ago and could not get it high enough in the tunnel to make correct drive shaft angles. The guys at Keisler tell me that theirs goes in without a problem. Thanks

:withstupid: I can also attest through the use of my own two eyes that it fits nicely. I would almost bet that if you supplied the beer and bar-b-que Mark (VNV) would even drive down to help put it in!

I have a tremec from Forte that I am putting in my corvette. The difference is in the shifter area, the shift tower on the Keisler is shorter and 2" offset to the left. I am going to use the standard one, and modify the stock Forte style shifter so it is lower and 2" to the left to fit the console.

Mine will be going in withing the next few weeks so I will let you know if it works!

Thanks for the replies guys. The trouble I had was at the tunnel about 10 inches forward of the shiftter location. What I did on the shifter was to cut the center out of a old console cover I had laying around . I built a removable cross member so I could raise the tail housing of transmission up as high as I could get it without hitting the tunnel any where. The transmission had a small vibration in under load and at crusing speed in 5th gear. I latter heard there were some of the converted tremecs that were drilled of center a little and that may have been what was causing the vibration.

I hope you have good luck with the install looking forward to hearing.

Default Re: Forte 5 sp conversion VS Keisler

I installed a Tremec from Forte about 2 years ago. I made a custom transmission mount (that wasn’t too hard) but the top of the transmission hit my cars transmission tunnel. I had to cut the transmission tunnel from the rear of the radio support to the firewall and build a custom transmission cover out of aluminum (not to hard either) in order to get the transmission to tuck under the car. Everything fit great except the shifter was to high and closer to the center so I can’t install my console which is a problem. I talked to the guys at Keisler and they said their shifter had some machining involved to make it install. They also machine the top of the transmission so it will fit without cutting the transmission tunnel, a big plus as it should just bolt in. They said if I sent them mine they will do the machining work, plus install their shifter which I am going to do when I pull my engine out as I don’t think mine will come out any other way. The overdrive is great as I have a SB 400 with 3.36 gears and cruise at 2000 rpm at 70 (225 x 60 x 15 tires) which is a lot better than it was.

I ordered a new 5 speed from Fortes (through a distributor) a couple months back, but told them to wait until they came out with their new shifter. I understand they are ready to ship it. It is going to be in the same location as the stock Muncie and T10 (19.5" back from the bellhousing, offset 2" to the left). The Fortes package I bought from the distributor ended up being about $1K cheaper than Keislers. I'm going to put it in my 59, without, hopefully, having to cut the shifter location on the console. I'm worried now, from reading this post, however, that I will have to cut on the tunnel to fit it in.

I ordered mine last week from Keisler and to tell you the truth. If I paid to much okay.. Will I have any surprises... Probably not. That is worth the money in my opinion and if the transmission ever had a problem I don't have to deal with a distributor that says I "modified" their product and they will not cover the warranty/problem. Keisler's system is tried and true.. That sold me by itself. Then again my wife says I'm gullable too... As always  Dave..

A Men to that.. I didn't want any problems either that's why I went to the Keisler. Just make sure you have a lift to do the install on and a good tranny jack with a pivoting head.

Also the tranny does not come with oil inside. Go out to your local GM dealer and pick up the GM "Sink-Ro-Mesh) Tuffy to spell.... tranny fluid. The Keisler does not use gear oil..!!!

Have fun..we did at our install party... :flag

:iagree:

Only 2 small issues came up. 1. Pilot bearing - VNV had a funky crankshaft that needed a different size bushing and 2. trans mount bracket had to be modified slightly. The Keisler tech was there for the install and noted the required modifications. More fun was had and food consumed then work. It really was an easy install.

It seems that Bubba who had the car before me did a little mod. The Motor was from a slush box tranny which at that time used a slightly smaller P baering. The beaing had been made to fit the 4 speed input shaft. So the new bearing would not fit in the crankshaft hole. We just hopped over to the auto parts store and found the correct P baering.

GM latter standerized the P baering for both auto and manual tranny's. The trans mount bracket has since been changed out for the correct one. The one in the kit was packed in erro by their tech before coming to the install so we just made it fit.

All in all we had a great time... :flag

Hey Viet Nam Vet I was woundering if your car had any driveline vibration in it after the keisler swap or if it was very smooth? Does it have any gear chatter or shifter noise in 5th gear? Can you tell by looking at the top of the transmission if they really machined down the top of the box in relationship to the factory built tremec 5 speed? Thanks SSS

Nope ...smooth as silk. No Vibration at all. No gear chatter in 5th or shifter noise. There is some gear wine in 1st 2nd as you go up in shifts but nothing that's annoying. With the replica shifter it does take a little more force to shift into 1st gear do to the short length of the shifter handle and the fact that it is a rail top shifting unit. The stock old shifter sits on the side of the Muncie and is longer so the piviot point is below the console giving you a longer lever makeing it easier to shift.

You can get a longer replica shifter handel from Keisler but it will sit up much higher then the stock location... kinda looks funny. I have since adapted to the 4 inch shifter throw and the extra force required to shift thru the gears.
They did rework the top box slector area so that it fits dead center in the consloe opening.

It's the best thing I have done to my 65.. I now enjoy the car even more..

Go For It...

i'm just curious..... you guys with the Keisler 5 speeds; how's the performance (say 0-130, or 1/4 mile ET's) with that combination of ratios? (that 1st to 2nd gear ratio jump seems huge)

Havent really run the car in the 1/4...But the fist gear leap is very noticeable with the lower ratio. The shift into 2nd feels the same as with the muncie. It just feels natural. Lotsa fun....

When I was considering the Keisler I compaired the following:

M20 w/4.11
10.36 -1st
7.73 -2nd
6.00 -3rd
4.11 -4th

Keisler w/3.36
11.00 -1st
6.65 -2nd
4.50 -3rd
3.36 -4th
2.76 -OD

Default Re: Forte 5 sp conversion VS Keisler (66427-450)

The spread between 1st and 2nd gear is a bit more than a wide ratio Muncie but you won’t notice it to much. I have a SB 400 with a lot of torque so I don’t notice it much at all. I will tell you that it is a lot easier starting off because of the low 1st gear especially if you have some cam in your engine (don’t have to slip the clutch with a 3.08 or 3.36 gear) . I don’t think ¼ mile times would matter to much as 5.0 Mustangs run this transmission with great success at the drags. It has been one of the best things I have done to my 65.
