Default Holley 4160 Choke Language

Is this a "manual" choke? I am considering purchasing a new Holley #01850S/4160 carb and it comes with a manual choke. I have visions of a cable running back to a pull handle under the dash. Is that what a "manual" choke is? Or as in the pic?

Paul,
Some people make the following distinction:

Automatic = electric
Manual = thermostatic spring and vacuum

others classify like this:
Automatic = electric, thermostatic spring/Vacuum
Manual = cable and push/pull in the interior.

I think in your case they are saying that the choke is NOT electric.

What you have now is called a divorced style automatic choke. The actuator coil is divorced (separate) from the carburetor.

There are also other types of automatic chokes, "hot air" and electric, that have bimetallic actuator coils mounted directly on the carburetor. The hot air can come from a tube through the exhaust manifold or the intake manifold.

A manual choke has to be engaged with your hand, such as using the pull cable you have envisioned.

Lars,
Two questions given that reply. Can I transfer the divorced choke setup/linkage to a new Holley? Or do you have a re-done 4160 for my 1967? I was running rich all last summer and it was a bit of a pain.

You can use the divorced choke system with any Holley that is set up for a divorced choke system. Most new aftermarket Holleys are equipped with electric chokes, and will not interface with the divorced choke system. The OEM carbs had the divorced choke systems. This same system was used with the first generation Q-Jets (up through 1974). You could probably transfer the entire OEM choke system as installed on your Holley over onto a new Holley so it would interface correctly with the divorced system.

I don't have any re-done Holleys, but I can certainly set up the one you have to run right. There is no reason that a Holley - or any carb - should run chronically rich. You just need a good setup done.

That is a good argument for not buying the new Holley. Thanks! As to setting up the one I have you will hear from me in several weeks when I get the car out and see how it is running after five months of winter storage. I very much appreciate your input, believe me.

if you're in the market for a carb with a divorced choke, I have one with ~ 200 miles on it, it's a new repo holley, model 3367, it came off a restored '66 350HP car.

if you're interested, drop me an email :seeya

The 3367 had a pipe from the exhaust manifold to the choke housing. Not the same as a 1967. But I do appreciate your offer!
