FS 283 Block Casting 3789935
283 block casting number 3789935. just out of the machine shop, honed and bored .30 over, block decked (no Ser#). line honed, cleaned, new freeze plugs, cam bearings. This block came with a 1961 C1 I purchased, (not the 0riginal engine) but do not plan to use the engine and I really don't know the history it. 500.00 plus shipping.

Casting Date
The casting date is J161, which I believe is oct 1 1961, I think the three number code means this is a townada casting.....which from what i read was not put into corvettes. Hope that helps.

Actually the date code J161 means Octobe 16, 1961 and the single digit for the year notates Saginaw manufacture. Tonawanda cast small blocks normally use the last 2 digits for the year and the castings were not used in Corvettes except for a few in 1965.This info comes from the NCRS spec guide.

If it has this square-head 1/8" NPT plug at the front, it's a Flint block; if it doesn't, it's a Tonawanda block.

Yes, but not a Corvette Block
While true that the it is a Flint block, it is not true that it is from a Corvette.
"935" blocks were used interchangably with "519" blocks during the last few months of 1961 model year production (from approx serial #9500 on) as GM ran out of 519 blocks before they ran out of cars to put them in. Therefore the only possible casting dates for a 935 block in a 1961 Corvette would be from F and early G (June, July 1961).
But yours is dated October 1961 which would mean that it would be for a 1962 model. However 1962 Corvettes were fitted with the new 327 cu in engine. Thus your engine is from a 1962 passenger car. If the pad stamp was still intact the letter codes could be used to pin it down exactly. There is nothing wrong with your engine, it is ostensibly the same as used in Corvettes, just that the dates won't work.
Hope this helps to clear things up!
