Default Sell my Muncie M21 ???

I have a Muncie M21 close ratio transmission I might sell if I buy a Tremec 5 speed for my 65 Corvette. My Muncie has a brand new Hurst shifter and kit with less than 50 miles on it. The Muncie is perfect BUT I do get a tiny grind sound going into 3rd if I shift it fast. Trying to get an idea what it's worth before deciding on the Tremec. Also have the original Muncie shifter and linkage. Any idea what it is worth? Possible buyers?

PS... I am throwing in a new LUK 10.4" clutch disc that has 50 miles on it as I need a different one with the Tremec TKO 600.

Thanks

Update, just read a thread regarding Synthetic gear oil in a Muncie. Might be why the fast shifting to third has a slight grind as my transmission did get Amsoil Synthetic put in by MSI instead of the regular gear oil. I don't remember it having the slight grind before so this may be the reason for it. I would guess it has 50 miles on the Muncie since the oil was changed. I would still do a rebuild on a transmission before installing though. I am sure it has been rebuilt at some time but when ????

When I put the Keisler in my '64, I was able to sell my rebuilt Muncie (w/recipts) with Hurst linkage and shifter on this forum for just $600..., and it took a long time.

Stipulation was that the buyer was to pick it up in Huntington Beach, CA. Trannie ended up going in someone's truck.

That seems a little low. The Hurst shifter and kit is almost $400.00 alone. Maybe Ebay is the way to go? Especially for a dated 65 Muncie?

New Hurst shifters maybe go for $400 but used do not. I picked up a few recently for an average $75. If the Muncie m21 has any difficulty at all going into gear as you described then again you are not going to get full dollar for it. A rebuild is not cheap and to install a trans that might eventually need to be pulled is not something people want to do. $1500 gets you a restored M21 on ebay.

Good luck

Ken, I have to with above.

I been looking for a M21 and a 3:08 rear end for about 6-7 months. I found a rebuilt M21 at a shop in southern CA for $1100. I also have a rebuilt at a Chevy Dealer in Salt Lake City at $950 becasue the case has a very small weld on it, but otherwise it's a guaranteed unit.

But fleaBay may be the right place to see what it'll bring. Make a big deal out of the date codes etc.

Hay Rich, how the heck are ya! Did the move to Napa area fall through? Yes, I thought they were worth at leat a $1000 without the new Hurst kit. I would probably do better selling them seperately. Ya think?

Hurst shifter has 50 miles. I really doubt anyone would sell one with 50 miles on it for $75. I would keep it before thinking of that price. As good as new and if I wanted to lie, I have the box and could claim it was new. Also, I am honest with the Muncie and don't make claims it was a recent rebuild like some would. So I may keep it all as it is original to the car anyway.

I've been looking for a Super Shifter, for another project, and transmission. Flea Bay prices seem to be $600-$800 avg. for a used trans and maybe $125-$150 on first rate shifters..

I'm still shopping..

Yours might bring more to a numbers matching car owner.....if you can find him.

Regards...Stan M.

I have a 1966 roadster that I have been looking for a M21 for several months now.would be willing to pay $750.00 for your transmission and shifter plus reasonable shipping to virginia.have no problem that the transmission may need work, because i will rebuild it before installing it anyway.
Thanks,Jerry

That sounds like a very reasonable offer to me. Clean, honest and done on both parts. I have an M20 with a Hurst from a 65 I would take that offer on.

I'd sell the M21 for $750 with original shifter only. Or $1,000.00 for the dated M21, original shifter, and new Hurst shifter and competition plus kit. Again, the shifter is new with less than 50 miles on it. I have to get a good price so I can buy a Tremec 5 speed. No great deals, sorry!

Default M21 Prices

[Prices on used Muncie M21 range $500 to $750. Rebuilt M21 add $200
to $350 more. Check Carlisle spring and fall meet, row "L" someplace around spaces 133. The gentleman has between 10 to 20 Muncie's
for sale and he makes you take the covers off and look in side so that
you can see that the trans you ar buying is not a piece of junk.

Does he include the original shifter and linkage? That is a good price if they are dated and have the shifter. No damage or welds on the case either?

I do not believe that dates really matter, because they are not judged in the NCRS.

oWEN,

I learn something every day. How come guys keep asking me for the date and case numbers? Must be of some importance? Or just information?

Thanks,

Ken

If your transmission grinds at all going into 3rd, at a minimum it needs a light rebuild (i.e. new synchros). You're going to have a hard time selling it for more than $500 unless the rest is pristine and the gear engagement teeth are nice and sharp.

I sold a really nice M21 on EBAY for $500. The innards were beautiful but the case had been painted with alumiblast and it had a tailshaft flaw that did not affect the operation. The transmission shifted perfectly and had been rebuilt sometime in its past becuase there was a magnet attached to the inside of the case. It took awhile to get that much for it.

I would guess anyone buying a used transmission would want to have it rebuilt. I know I would. I heard 3rd gear in a Muncie M21 with a slight grind is pretty typical and probably a syncro. The grind I mentioned is almost non-existent and only when speed shifting. No problem with normal shifting. But yes, it is there on occasions. I don't have to sell it as it matches my car so I may keep it. It has no flaws in the housing and is not painted. I was just trying to re-coupe some funds from ordering the Tremec TKO 600.

If you're trying to recoup funds, then why don't you care if you sell it or not? Seem like a contradiction. As I always say, 75% of something is better than 100% of nothing.....
