Today I spoke to CAL DMV and they told me the plate number is not being used at this time. Although the plates need to be registered to the car to reserve the number. The lady that I was talking to was not real knowledgeable about the process. And said something about using form #REG352. The CAL DMV phone number is 800-777-0133. I hope all this helps, Tim
The new "black" plates production is killing the cache. CA DMV is issuing these plates to anyone or any vehicle who steps up with a payment. I did not know this when the black plates and previous version yellow plates were in the interest stage (to see if enough interest to produce). I believe the yellow plates would have received the minimum if it was known that they could be used on most anything. (yellow plates did not make the minimum)
Seeing a new black plate on a new Lexus SUV just ruins my day.

You are correct, new plates can be bought for less $$. But they would be new and not antiques in great condition. I guess it depends on what you want on your 1960's era car. I have owned these plates since 1993. They came off my Porsche speedster replica I built back then. Tim
The new plates are not replicating not only the patina and originality of the real black plates, but they don't look like the originals. The yellow paint of the numbers is off.
