On a real side exhaust car, what many think is the frame, is the bird cage. It is under the door and the side exhaust runs along it. It should have square notches cut into it with u shaped clips. This is how the rocker moldings attach on a real side exhaust car. Under the car exhaust cars have metal tabs tack welded to the bird cage and the rocker moldings attach to these. When folks add them onto a car, they either just bend the metal tabs inward or worse, they cut them off flush with the bird cage. In any event if the notches are not there the side exhaust have been added. Those notches were pinch cut at the factory. They were only done at St. Louis. No A.O. Smith car is a real side exhaust car.

Just starting a 65 396 car myself, I can attest to the tremendous work, cost, and attention to detail the car for sale exhibited. Worth every penny at $100k. Good investment as we face tremendous inflation over the next few years.
