Default Wrong forum, moved to general topic forum. Numbers matching question for 1980.

I am looking at a 1980 L-82 that seems to have matching numbers. The engine suffix is ZBC which is an L-82 and the last 5 digits on the engine stamp are the same as the last 5 on the vin. So it appears to have matching numbers for the engine to the vin. Where the concern and question is for this car is this. The fifth digit for an L-82 is supposed to be an "L" in the vin number. But this car's vin has an "8" as the fifth digit which would signify an L-48 engine.

Could the Corvette Black Book have this wrong? I would have thought that the vin would have an "L" as the fifth digit since the engine stamp and vin number appear to be a match.

Anyone run into this before or could you give me some insight on this?

Thanks!

The corvette black book states that the fifth letter or number in this case would be a "6" for the L-82, "8" for the L-48, and "H" for the 305. Your correct about the ZBC being the L-82 and with the VIN matching that of the car it's probably numbers matching (as far as the engine block goes).

There are 2 stamps on the engine pad. One is the assembly and engine identification stamp. An example is V0416 ZBC which translates to:
V=Flint V8 engine plant
04=Month of assembly (April)
16=day of the month
ZBC=230hp, 350ci Automatic L82

The 2nd stamp is the vin derivative stamp. An example is 1AS4XXXXX which translates to:
1=Chevrolet
A=1980
S=Final assembly St Louis
4=St Louis built vehicle
5X's= Sequential build (serial) number

Different info on Idavette...

http://www.idavette.net/facts/80.htm

Fifth Digit Code: 8=350ci 190, 6=350ci 230hp, H=305ci, 180hp

now go back and see if that "8" is really a "6" and you are matching smatching L-82!

yes, I have a 1980 VIN #8 with a factory GM L-82 (automatic transmission) with Gymkhana suspension
(called Tow Package) 100% original/ 1 owner,, My dad, its mine now since 1982, I was 16 when I acquired this. I didnt drive it on the public roads for over 5 years after my dad died of a heart attack (My father bought it brand new, ordered from a dealership called Balise Chevrolet in Springfield Mass. I know all this cause I was there with my mom watching it roll off the tractor trailer on the delivery day in the South End of downtown Spfld in July of 1980, three days after my bday. it took 18 days from the time he ordered to be delivered, for some reason there was a delay at the factory. I'm my parents only child & I have all the paperwork, including the option checklist & window sticker & service records thur out its warranty back in the day.. my car is VIN #8 with L-82 (including the fender badges too) heres a photo. The only thing that's aftermarket about this now is the cars Alpine stereo system (still cassette lol) but I still have the original Delco AM/FM 8-track that my dad ordered & came with (my dad loved his country music 8 track tapes lol) itll be staying in my familys name for years too come as my youngest son (who is now 20) will be taking the raines when my time is up.. my oldest son is a FORD guy lol & has his own Shelby Cobra GT500... Gotta love the '80s. Peace !!
