Default Charging a battery?

Is it ok to charge a battery while in the car and all the cables are connected. It is such a pain to remove the battery...

I've done it with no problems.

Just be careful to keep your charger terminals away from anything they can ground on (like the metal frame/screws of the storage compartment).

For a 72, you should be able to safely charge it in place. Some battery chargers are "noisy," they can produce voltage spikes from their internal regulators (read this cheap battery charger). For later model cars with a lot of computerized stuff, it would be prudent to disconnect the battery from the cars electricals during charging.

Also, a lead acid battery, the kinds used in cars, will loose a significant amount of it's capacity if it's ever allowed to go completely dead (flat). I read someplace that a lead acid car battery can loose 1/3 of it's capacity if it's allowed to go completely dead. This seems to be about what my experience has been.

If you have dead battery problelm, solve the problem. Then think about throwing the rejuvinated battery away and buying a new one.

Yes, it is safe. However, it is better to disconnect one terminal prior to charging. That will prevent any sensitive electtrical circuits from being affected by the voltage spikes.
