1972 Transmission Codes - How to decode?
Anyone out there that can decode transmission ID numbers? The Black Book has everything listed but transmission codes. I don't have the ID for mine (have to get the car up), but would like to know how to read what I find once I do get under there.
What prompted me was that I came across an old ad on the Net for a modified 72 LT-1 (my Vette is also a 72 LT-1). It showed a VIN of 1Z37L2S514999 and then a picture of the tag plate on the side of the transmission case with an ID of 6271516WD. Is this supposed to match in some way to the VIN (as the engine ID does)? If not, how do you decode it to determine what the transmission is and if it's original?
Thanks in advance!!

M.F. Dobbins book "Fact Book of the 68-72 Stingrays"
says, and I quote, "Manual transmissions from 1963-72 were stamped with serial number of the Corvette into which they were installed." It makes no mention about automatics.

Look for a letter code.....example..in 69 they were:
S for 3 speed
P..(meaning "Muncie Plant",first letter)
A.. Muncie 4 speed M20
B.. Muncie 4 speed M21
C..Muncie 4 speed M22
K,L,Y were automatics...
1969 to 1974 Muncies got a ratio designator at the end of the serial number. An example would be P4D23B. This equates to April 23, 1974, M21 ratio.
There is a link to Vin but I can't remember how that works...
