Under Hood Emblem, Decals and Valve Cover Info
1979 L-82
My aluminum valve covers are presently painted black...not sure if they come this way or not...but it appears the paint is flaking off.
Questions:
Anybody have pics of the correct OEM emblems and decals that go under the hood of a 79 L-82?
What decal (if any) is on the top of the air filter cover?
Is the air filter cover originally s'posed to be chromed?
Are the valve covers s'posed to be painted black?
Are the L-82 emblems on the hood a sticky or bolted like the cross-flag gas cap emblem?...I notice my side fender crossed-flag emblems are stickies.
Is the crossed-flag emblem on the front nose a bolt on or sticky?
Thanks,
Jim

The only question I can answer is the valve covers. All the ones I've seenfrom 79 on are black cast alum.with the fins not painted. On the right cover is a place where a black emblem with crossed flags goes.Same as Z/28's.These are avaliable in all cataloges. This is what my 82CE has.I'm not sure what year GM started painting them black. My 69 and 71 Z/28's have the same covers but are not painted.Hope this helps

I recently replaced my valve cover gaskets and when I had the covers off - I cleaned, preped and sanded the covers. I then painted them black and then sanded the paint from the fins. Looks really good. It is the best thing about my engine compartment right now. Take the little badge off on the pass side cover and get to work
Like you, I rescued my '79 L82 from an idiot that was just letting it sit there and rot because I think he did not anticipate haveing to tinker on it all of the time. A wheel bearing went out on him and I dont think that he wanted to spend the $ to get it fixed so he let it sit.

Yes the valve covers on a 79 L82 are black with the fins having been sanded.
There are no decals on top of the air cleaner, just on the side.
No the air cleaner should not be chrome, it is all black.
The L82 emblems on the hood are bolted on, look underneath the hood and you will see the nuts.
