It takes several, personal recommends are:
Assembly Manual
Haynes Motor Manual for your year
Chilton for your year
you will find different levels and quality of detail in every different book, I have I think 5 different books that apply to my vette

I was going to buy the assembly manual and Chilton's but I thought I'd better ask about the repair manual.

Seeing as how Im new to repair stuff, Im looking for something not overy complicated. I may go by Barnes and Noble today to see if they have any too.

you will be surprised at what you can do with a modest amount of tallent and a good book. The tallent you can develope by installing the mods you can afford by the savings you get from doing it yourself.
Not to mention the satisfaction of standing back and looking at a job well done.

Factory shop manual. You can get used originals on eBay in nice shape for about 1/10 the price of a repop.

If you havent read, I have a semi-faint gas smell in the garage that mostly goes away not long after being in there. So I want to try and fix this myself, based on some suggestions as to the cause. *Sounds* reasonably simple, but damn, its hard to get under that car.

see if you can determine which end of the car its coming from for a start. If you can't, it could be coming from a variety of places:
Gas Cap not sealing
Gas line leak at the tank
Vent Line at the tank
Fuel Pump Connections
Vent canister connections
carb has several likely locations, look it over for varnish stains on the outside
could be fuel evaporating from air horn

Mine does it too, never found anything like a wet leak and it lives under a cover outside so I am not going to worry to much about it until after the rebuild
Good Luck

I was under the rear of the car and couldnt smell anything. I did smell it faintly when I had my head under the hood.
