My own sons both smashed up their first cars. I figured they would so I made sure they were driving tanks so they wouldn't get hurt. Now they are a little older and could probably stay out of trouble with a fast car.

I think the ultimate first car for a teenager has the following attributes:

- Reliable
- Seats only two
- Not too fast
- Manual transmission (keeps them more involved in driving)
- Has modern safety equipment
- Is something they can be proud of
- Is disposable (because they will make mistakes).

Late C3s meet some of those attributes but are missing some key ones.

My older son and I bought a new S-10 for him (GMS). For a few months, I covered the payments. Once he entered the Marines, the payment came out of his bank account. Four years later, he's paid off the truck early and is deciding if he wants to keep it or get something different.

The next son bought himself an 85 Lincoln Town Car. While the car only had like 30K miles, it was always breaking down. He couldn't afford to keep it running. That was OK since he lost his license due to a non-driving offense.

I bought the youngest son a 95 Honda Del Sol. It met all the requirements except disposability. (I bought a really nice unit and I used it as a summer car between vettes and before he got his license.) Shortly before Christmas, he slid the right rear into a tree on an icy road and did just enough damage to total the car. The damage wasn't bad, but he hit in just the wrong place for that unibody car. He then bought himself a 98 Monte Carlo.

Very lucky boy...very trusting Dad.
Don't want to spoil his B-Day, and not saying your son is ir-responsable....but trusting an inexpierenced 16yr old "new" driver with a fiberglass classic car is like playing Russian roulette with a side-by-side 12ga shotgun. Not only do they lack the expierence of navigating safely through traffic, making the correct decisions in emergency situations, ability to pull out of a fishtail slide, and length/width judgment when pulling forward/reverse, but also damaging outside influence in the highschool parking lot, mall, McDonalds, arcade, etc. Those places will tear up that car in no time...
Not to mention the STRONG temptation to street race, (he WILL get peer pressure & challenged on the streets often) distractions (music choice IS more important that watching the road) jealousy from others prompting vandalisum, showing off, and the overall lack of proper judgment that all teens posess. Let him get a few years driving expierence before handing him the keys. Let him take short drives with you in the passenger seat instructing.
YES....I know of what I speak cause I went through this with my son...(and his friends) and NO, at 19 he still can't drive my car without me.
I wish you and him the best....

BTW if you think my 16 year old is spoiled,do you see the little one next to him, that's the one that's spoiled,he's asking for a new c6 already.

Why didn't you give him the yellow Bug??

Actually, there are some advantages to a vette... Only 1 passenger - few things more distracting to a young driver than a car full of kids. Hard to get a girl preggers in a vette.... He wll have to drive very carefully to avoid any kind of tiny fender bender either with curbs or other cars. Minor contact that would be harmless with many cars will damage a vette.

The obvious problem is temptation to drive fast, but that exists with any car.

I think getting this car for him is a good move, if he's responsible. I got a '77 Trans Am for my 16th birthday, with a Pontiac 400 and 4-speed. It was only 5 years old at the time and it great condition. By the time we were done modifying it, it was wickedly fast. The biggest problem was that I got a bad reputation in the neighborhood, thanks to dad taking it out for "test drives". On the street, I drove it very cautiously because I was paranoid about anything happening to it. I'm guessing your son might have the same reaction. The hard part is not showing off in front of friends.
