Starter Rebuild Kit...good or bad
CF Peeps,
My starter made that "noise" the other day that tells me it's soon to be departing. Any opinions on this rebuild kit?
Thanks,
Steve

Looks good to me. That should address 99% of the things that wear out on a starter. However, for not much more you could get a rebuilt a Advance Auto or AutoZone and have a warrenty with less hassle. Just my .02.

Rockauto.com shows starter prices ranging from $130 down to $43
(including core charge). Figure $15 to ship it, and you could order
a rebuilt online ... under $60 shipped. I'd bet you could find one cheaper
in a local cheap parts place. It's worth a few calls.
If you diagnose the actual issue, it could be even cheaper to just repair what's wrong with yours.
I find the solenoids go often, followed next by the drive. I've never run across
a bad starter that needed brushes or any of those other parts. On the other hand,
$25 isn't a bad deal for that kit of parts. You probably won't find a decent solenoid
for much less than $15-20. Go for the kit, I guess (if $50-60 is too much to pay for a rebuilt one).

I've rebuilt my starters and there is a local rebuilder here in CT that stocks good quality parts. My firend used to work there and was telling me how they have been getting in cheaper brushes and other parts now from China. That's why the chain stores can sell them cheap, because that's how they're made. If you can take the diff apart you can do the starter too.

Have rebuilt many starters in my day (I am old) and this kit looks like it has everything you need. Don't know your symptoms exactly but the bendix drive is something that is included and that I like to replace rather than attempt to rebuild. I also replace the bushings (they are in your kit) in both ends because if they are worn, your armature can ground out against the fields. Brushes usually last a long time but doesn't hurt to replace them. anyway
I use emery cloth (sandpaper) on the contact disc inside the solenoid unless you plan to replace the solenoid completely.
Looks like a good price for the kit since it includes the Bendix drive but I wouldn't pay to much more. Of course, I am saying all this based on Massachusetts prices which are right up there. No bargains in Taxachusetts.

Mkflanagan,
Where are you buying rebuilt starters for $25 (price of kit on e-bay) and who rebuilt them?
Seems awfully cheap. (You get what you pay for??) What part of the US are you in, as that may affect price also.
Just curious,
Kurt

By the time you pay for the kit (26.00 rounded up) and the shipping (10.00) you are only 5 bucks from getting a reman one at the local parts store with a lifetime warranty. If the one you rebuild goes bad or wears out YOU pay to replace it, if theirs goes they replace it for free and it only costs the time to pull and install. These are old starters and are fairely cheap compared to mamas toyota. It will save you money and time that can be used elsewhere on your car. I have rebuilt everything on my car, but these easy and inexpensive things like starters, steering pumps and alts, it just makes too much sense to replace and save time. You arent losing anything. My 2 cents and change
