Default 76 dual exhaust w/ cats, pictures

Got my car back today from the muffler shop. I had them install a Corvette Central true dual exhaust with Magniflow mufflers and dual cats.

Perfect sound. The car sounds very healthy but not to loud.

I had my wife drive it a few miles and I followed behind. It sounds even better from outside of the car.

They did a nice job of routing the pipes. I have seen some real butcher jobs.

Nice job. You might want to get a heat shield over that cat on the left.

Looks great, what did the cost of the system set you back. I'm gonna have to put a set on my 75 sometime next month.

Can I ask why you keep the catalytic converters? I thought a car of that age is excempt from smog issues.

Well technically its illegal to change any emission control on any vehicle.

If you have cats on you have a much better chance of passing a visual inspection. My guess is that in this guys area, he doesn't have to pass emissions tests. In which case...yeah why keep the cats?

I live in suburban Chicago and cars from 1968 or newer need to be emisions tested. They just have to meet the requirements for the year they were made. I know people who have passed without cats but it requires very carfull tuning.

If I switched to antique plates I wouldn't need to get tested but I would be limited on how much I could drive it.

Also the manifold studs were FUBAR and I didn't want to mess with torching them out laying on my back with the car on jackstands. I figured it would take me alot longer to do than an exhaust shop and an exhaust shop would be braking federal law and could face big fines for removing the cat.

I had to go look at my receipts. The exhaust system with mufflers, hanger and all the clamps was $350. The cats were $125 each. The shop charged me $300 labor which was double his bid, because 2 of the manifold studs broke and he had to pull the right manifold to fix it.

The shop said the Corvette Central system fit very well. If you order from CC do it on line, you will save a bunch on shipping.

Those do look really nice. Do you have any engine modz? Did it make a difference in performance?

It's a stock L-82. It started raining right after I brought her home and hasn't stoped, so I only drove her about 10 miles all in town. She feels alot more free, wants to rev easier and seems to accelerate better.
