Default The body lift was a success

Hi Guys,

We had a great day on Sunday and the body is finally off the frame. Here are a few shots of the fun we had.

Thanks to all of you for your advise getting this far.

Now the real work starts!!

Did you remove the interior before you pulled the body off?

Great, boy does that bring back some memories/nightmares. That frame looks like it needs some loving attention. What are your plans?

I had to choose between building a wooden frame to support the chain falls or use the backhoe. Didn't have enough nails!

I removed the seats to help access the seat belt bolts, the carpet because it was rotten and a few trim pieces to access the body mounts. Since I'll be leaving the body work till last (next year) I thought it best to leave as much of the interior in tact as possible. I'm afraid my memory sucks and I won't remember where everything goes!

Take lots of pics and label all of your fasteners. I suffer from CRS as well and I find the pics and labels help alot.

I'm toying with rebuilding the old frame verse finding a replacement. The old frame as you can see is gone in the corners, but also sounds thin in the side rails. The only frame I've found close to me is from a 79 automatic car. He wants $1000 for it and I'll have to sand blast and modify to fit. I think I'll keep looking for a while and if I come up short then I'll get this frame blasted and start from there. I'm looking to build a solid street car in the 300-400HP range, so I'll need a good foundation.

I plan to rebuild the chassis with new front/rear components from several kits. (I'm checking all the catalogs now).

The motor is low mileage and I'm hoping to get away with minimal bottom end work. The top end will likely be an Edlebrock Performer package. (Aluminum heads, intake cam etc.)

The transmission is an M21 and the differential has a stock 3.36 gear set-up. I spoke with the transmission shop yesterday who are now lined up to rebuild both. Although, he's steering me towards a 5-speed with taller gears. I'll let you know on that one!

The body will sit for the winter, but the plan is to keep the stock appearance and yes the metallic yellow will stay!

I'll post the update photos a I go along.

Thanks for the interest!
Ian

I used quart size Ziplock baggies and hung them from nails on an overhead rafter. They have a place to write on the Ziplocks in white. The rafter was almost full of baggies from side to side and it's 24 ft wide!
Great advice!

I went so far as to create a few directories ("engine", "suspension", "frame", "body", etc.) on my home PC. Then I created a file for each piece of hardware that came off with a note in the file telling me where I put the hardware. ( I had a bunch of plastic tubs I labelled A, B, C, etc.)

I lose my glasses twice a day... I KNEW I wasn't going to be able to find stuff 2 or 3 years after I took it off the car.

BAG AND TAG, it will save you some serious running around time later.

Good Luck!!

I'm fixing to pull my body off in a couple of weeks. I've seen a couple of pics with the same looking cart for the body to sit on. Where can I get the plans for one of those? That looks like it works perfectly without spending alot of money.

If you use a backhoe to lift the bodyoff. I can't imagine what tools you use if your painting the house. You remind me of Tool Time.

There are a couple of good plans available on this forum. Search some of my older threads for the link and if you can't find anything, PM me and I'll send you a scan of the drawings I have. One thing to note, this design is a little short. I added an extra 2x4 on the front and could use another to pick up the nose better.

Ah, a good Hoe opperator.
I'm glad it this wasn't one of those bad luck threads, that was my first thought when I saw the first pic. I could see it now the thread title would have read (hose blew Vette smushed).
Any way back on track, Good job, did you take lots of pics for referance for reassembly?

Wish I had a backhoe for when the time comes. Great idea though!!

On keeping track of the parts, I use the AIM and put the page number and other reference info to help me remember when the parts came from. For those that won't fit a baggie, I use tags with strings, big enough to record AIM info..So we'll see if this works as it's been a couple of years since some of the parts were removed.

Still got an old land rover to get out of the garage before the 73 gets any more attention.
