Default Chrome Front Bumper on a '73?

Hi,

Anybody know what would be involved in swapping the plastic front bumper on a '73 to a chrome one like the '68-'72's?

Best Wishes,
Gary

Considerably more than it might look. All the brackets and sheet metal are different. This is not a bolt-in. You could get the 72 and 73 AIMs and compare front bumper installations for each.

It costs so much that all I have ever seen here in CF is people asking.
Noone ever followed through.
That said, there was ONE picture posted that I have ever seen of a
73 wit ha chrome front bumper that was retro-fitted to the 73 front end.
It came out nice.
You CAN swap the entire front clip .... again - cost prohibitive.

If the '73 had been hit in the front you could add a 72 clip, maybe. But why?

There was a 72 for sale on ebay that had the 73 front bumper.

Agree with all,..the 73 front end is a thing of beauty. I now have two 73's. At the risk of being flamed (yes, I know I'm in the minority) I've always thought the front bumpers on 72 and earlier C3's looked like an after-thought.

73's are a one-year only car,..very special to it's owners. Leave it the way the General intended.

My opinion,
Wes

as for the nay sayers...screw em, its your cake, bake it how you want to. somebody will always hate the nicest car on earth anyway. My suggestion go to aci/vanacors places like that, and purchase the half sections where its the front clip from the wheel well forward. cut the old one bond the new one and add your hardware. Its probably the easiest route, but won't be cheap unless you can fiberglass yourself.

How come when someone asks a question similar to the one being asked, the poster gets flooded with questions as to why they would WANT to do something like this?

Because it's his freaking car and want to fix it up the way HE likes it not yours......

If he wants to throw a Mako body on it, drop in a V6, throw on 20" rims and paint it pepto bismol pink with racing stripes thats HIS business.

Gary,

Good luck with whatever you decide. As far as changing the front end just purchase an assembly manual for both years. It'll have exploded diagrams so you can see whats involved.

I would like to do the same thing. I think the 73 side vents, and eliminating that wiper door arrangement are the way to go. A 73 with a 68-72 chrome front bumper would be cool!

I even went so far as to ask my fiberglass guy what was involved. He said "You don't want to know". It would not be cheap.

The one thing to remember is that you have a one year only production run. My orginal wants was a chrome C3, but I found my '73 @ what was a very afforable price as compared to the "chromies". I have SEEN THE LIGHT!!!

IMHO, the lines on the 73 are very clean and flow much better.

But it is your car and you fix it up the way YOU want...

Sell the '73 and buy a '72. Much easier. . . . Or give me the '73 and buy a '72. Then we'll both be happy.

I changed my 73 alittle. I kept the front glass bumper & eliminated the seam lines BUT glassed in 72 fenders & purchased the "cheese grater" grills for the vent opening. I could live w/o the chomie front bumper but had to have the 70-72 grills on the fender vents

With all due respect, cutting and pasting fiberglass only gets the sheetmetal modifications. He would still need all the various chrome bumper bracketry, including the frame extensions, plus the bumper, none of which are on his '73.

why not go the OTHER way, and put a 80-82 style front bumper on? Looks very cool. That is next on my list for the 73!
The great thing is that ACI/Vanacors and others make ones that will fit earlier models without cutting the fenders up!

I guess I'm the only one that would rather have a 73 front on my 82.See we all have our own opions of what we like, thats why I don't say anything when someone wants to mod his car like this, but since I like the 73 front you allready know where I stand.
