what makes a C3 SO heavy?
True its a cast Iron block, 350 or up, but its got a fyberglass body, a 68 chevel will weigh bous 3800 but thats a steel body, shouldent vettes b sugnificantly lighter my 74 weighs 3300

The fiberglass is lighter than steel, but these cars have a lot more steel in them than it looks; Full box steel frame with 3 cross members, calipers, birdcage, half shafts, etc..

My 1980, without me in it on an Oregon DOT truck scale was 3,098 lbs.
Granted, it had very little fuel, engine bay has been cleared out , AC removed, no T-tops, aluminum shorty headers....

My '80 is also weighs just over 3000 lbs. with no AC, composite rear spring, Steeroids, VBP front monoleaf spring, Trans Am electric headlight actuators, GMPP crate engine with no AIR pump or emissions plumbing, mini starter, BW Super T-10 4-spd, etc. I have a 330 HP engine in a 3100 lb. car. Do the math.
BTW, '80 was the year Chevrolet put the Corvette on a weight loss program and trimmed off about 300 lbs.

some parts of the car are unbeliable heavy...the calipers for example, the complicated front suspension, the steel frame is similar to a truck boxed frame with the 2 parallel rails and 3 crossmembers, the steel defenses (at least in my '77)...and so on!
that's why in any decent program of upgrading a C3 first should come to loose at least 600/800 lbs of useless weight, like a fat man who decided to be quick on the 100 mt run...

My 71 SB with auto/ac/ps but with headers and a fiberglass mono spring was 3382#s. That was with about a half tank of fuel and NO spare tire installed. All else was as it left the factory.

500lbs doesn't sound like much, but, did you ever try to pick up 500lbs? it's heavy. my 80 weighs 3220lbs.
