Default Solid vs hydraulic lifters

By looking at the lifters themselves, how do you tell the difference between solid and hyraulic flat tappet lifters? Most of the solids that I've looked at seem to have a groove in the lower body that the hyraulics lack. The middle "flexible" section of the hyraulic lifters seem to have one or two ribs vs a smooth body for the solids. Are these random or brand observations or real differences?

Use a push rod and push down into the seat on the lifter with it sitting on a solid surface.

Any movement - hydraulic
No movement - solid

Thanks guys. I knew that there was a trick. The simpler the better

I'm kind of amazed that there is no visual differences though.
