78 Pace Car - What is it worth
I have a 62 and two 66s - I have never owned or no nothing about the 78 Pace Cars other than they have never been as collectible as originally believed. Someone has offered my a 78 L-82 numbers matching original paint and interior with 50,000 miles 4 - speed - he contends there were only 442 4 speeds with L-82 option made in that year. I am going to look at the car this week - what is a reasonable offer - I am looking to buy it with some potential upside.

hey rich, the one that sold for 46k??? would you happen to have gotten any of the background on it??? An acquaintance of mine from Virginia Beach, Virginia sold one that was never titled. He drove to the factory, put it on a trailer and rolled it out of his garage to polish it. just curious...

I spoke with the owner of the one that had 90 miles.(Lot 711)..can't recall any more details than that, except it still had the factory plastic protection inside...I was there Thursday...Lot# 1518 went Sunday...

That is a realistic price range for a nice stock one that you can enjoy as is or by repairing some normal wear maintenance items. Pace cars were stalled for a long time, but seem to have started to gain momentum in the past two years. Documentation would be a plus.

Ditto for Pace Cars with cloth interiors. By far most of them were leather, but the silver cloth cars are out there.

I have 44k on mine, fully restored and it appraised at $32k, though it would probably sell around $25k. 50k miles is not low for a Pace Car. There are many Pace Cars with minimal miles or some that have never been titled. To say a 50k mile Pace is low is not really true. For a normal '78 yes, but Paces are a little different. In my case I wanted one to drive, and restore, so I bought one a little less than perfect. Yes L82, 4 speeds were the rarest, but oddly many are popping up now. I believe some are converting them to grab a few more bucks. Beware a lot of fakes were created in that period as well. Chekc the seial number! True Paces will be denoted inthe serial number and the engine casting should match.

Yes 50k is low for a 29 year old car, but not considered low milage on a Pace Car when there are many out there with under 10k and quite a few with little or no milage! 50k is a nice driver and should be in the 15k to 20k range. Really it comes down to what the buyer feels it is worth.

I just picked up a fully documented, numbers matching 56k mile Pace Car with L82, 4 spd and cloth interior option for $16.5 that's a twenty footer. It sat out what looks like under a car port. It'a a perfect driver but the chassis is moderately rusted, interior carpet needs to be replaced and needs much mechanical attention...like power door locks don't work, tach, a few dash guages, etc. Plans include full restoration and would like to converse with some other Pace Car owners that have gone through this...like swato

i bought mine 2 years ago with 62,000 on the clock, in need of an interior restoration with a very decent (and repainted shortly before i bought it) exterior. i bought it to drive for a while before i took it apart and redid the interior (which is now underway). L48 auto with gymkana (i have a copy of the original dealer invoice). i paid under 12,000 for mine with shipping to my home (from another state) included. it certainly wasn't perfect, but it wasn't a rat either. i figure when it is done, i will have about 19,000 in the car, and i really don't think it would bring much more than that legitimately. it seems like there is at least one on ebay at most times with little or no miles on it. interestingly enough, at last year's barrett-jackson auction, a pace car with about 8,000 miles unrestored in excellent condition (a true survivor) couldn't bring 23,000. i don't remember how it was configured, but i believe it was an L48 auto. the NADA on line value guide shows under 30,000 for a mint vehicle, i think.
i would be very suspect of one with little milage (yes in my opinion 50 is low for a 29 year old car, lol) or one that was stored for a long time because it will probably require replacement of most if not all of the seals, not to mention most brake parts and front end soft parts, and that all adds up cost wise (particularly if you have to have someone else do the labor). a quick look at the black book should be able to give you the number of L82 4 speeds built as pace cars (i do know the number is pretty low, but don't remember of hand what it is). seems like under 300 seems about right, but i wouldn't swear to it.
