Default HELP!!!!!!!! Steering problem

Ok, so I changed my power steering pump and power steering cylinder due to leaks. Got the leaks stopped, and got to start the car today. It sat just fine at idle, then I tried turning the steering wheel, as soon as I touched it the steering wheel started violently shaking back and forth. I shut the car off, and then started it again, same problem, then the car turned the steering wheel all the way to left jumping the whole way, then switched directions, I shut it off again, next time I started it it was back to just violently shaking the steering wheel back and forth. Any ideas?

Your hoses are reversed. You may have mixed them up when you replaced the cylinder. Remember they are supposed to be crossed at the valve

Thanx for the info, but what do you mean by crossed at the valve?

Ok, I just looked at my assembly manual, after you guys said crossed, I looked at the diagram and it looks like the lower hose on the control valve is suppose to go to the upper opening on the cylinder. If this is correct then this is definatly my problem, because mine is lower on the valve going to lower on the cylinder. My next question is, after I switch these hoses, what do I have to do to bleed the system, do I just need to start it and turn the steering wheel back and forth, filling the pump every so often, or is there something else? Thanx to you guys again, I never would have figured this out on my own. This forum is great.

just went thru this myself. once you have the hoses on correctly. jack the car up on stands, if the wheel still goes to the left. there is a tin cap on the end of the control valve, take it off and there is a 7/16 nut in there, with the car running on jack stands, turn the nut to the left until the wheels center themselves, turn it till it starts to go to the right then back it off till the wheels are centered and stay there.

Yep, they supposed to be crossed, thats why the curved parts are different radisus on the valve end, one crosses over the other

Yup, this was my problem. I switched the lines last night, it was a messy job now that everything had fluid in it. But once I got it all back togeather, it works great. Thanks to all for your help

Vette Crazy, I never thought about it, but after replacing all my power steering lines, my car pulls to the left when I let go of the wheel, and it didn't before. Are you saying that the adjustment you described will fix that?

The adjustment will fix the pull to the left as long as it is due to the steering and not some other problem like under/over inflation and/or poor alignment. Worked for me.
