Default 265/50/15's on stock 15X8 of 1971

this is what i was told at americas tire co about a second ago. he said they just put 4 on an unmodified '72 and they fit great and looked amazing. WTF?????? can this be true? how could it if 255/60's wouldn't fit. they said the overall diameter is abt the same as a 255/60. so how could they possibly fit?

The overall diameter is less than a 255-60, a 275-50 tire will also fit but it would look silly because of the huge gap between rubber and fender.

Best fit without rubbing is 245-60 front and 255-60 rear

that's what i thought. i asked the guy if there was a bunch of space btwn the fender and the tire and he said there wasn't. he said the series number indicates the percentage of the width that the sidewall is. and that is when he told me that the diameter is basically the same. hmmm.......

Tirerack has very good information on their website. Select a tire and click on 'specs' - it will show you all the dimensions (diameter, thread width and so on)

They list 25.5" diameter for 265-50 and 26.6 for 245-60 and 27" for 255-60 (Dunlop GT Qualifier)

The guy had these tires, see..... He couldn't get rid of them, and then...you walked through the door............ (you get the picture).

Wide tires can only give you additional rock nicks in your paint. Keep 'em inside the fenders; that's what they are for.
