Default How to verify it's a ZZ4?

Looking at a car and the seller claims it has a ZZ4 (per prior seller 2 years ago, so no records). Block number is correct (10243880) for a ZZ4 and a few other truck engines. Currently has a tunnel ram with dual Holley carbs, so the intake is gone. Block is painted Chevy orange and heads are unpainted (aluminum). Very clean with no apparent leaks. How can I verify this is actually a ZZ4 engine? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

At the front of the passenger side head there should be numbers stamped, post them here http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/Disc...tml?1004424102 and ask what you've found.

The link below should download GM Performance Parts' 2006 catalog. The catalog has descriptions of the engines as-well-as part numbers of the components (p/n in the back of the catalog).

Since the intake is gone, which would have a big bow-tie on it, see if the timing chain cover is plastic. ZZ4's are the only ones I know of that run this cover.

Also, the aluminum heads should be centerbolt style and the dipstick will be on the passenger side like all late model single piece rear seal engines.

If the oil pan hasn't been painted, mine has a large ZZ4 stenciled on it.

If you cant verify it simply by Numbers or the Plastic Timing cover, then This will verify it:
The ZZ4 is a OEM Roller engine. That is, its Factory machined for Roller Cam and Lifters. Underneath the Intake Is the Factory Spider to Hold the Lifters in Place. If it Has the spider its GMPP ZZ engine.

Default Zz4

Every ZZ4 that I've seen had "ZZ4" clearly stamped on the engine pad in front of the pass. side head.

Here is a picture of my ZZ4... look in front of the passenger side head under the tension arm for the a/c compressor and you will see an 8 digit alpha/numeric stamp. The last 3 digits should be "ZZ4".

All vortec 350's have the plastic Timing cover
the block casting # will be 10243880 on all ZZ4 and truck engines
If it's not clearly marked ZZ4 you have to get the cam part # to be sure
