replace dimmer/turn signal switch & steering column diagrams
The dimmer switch is not working on my '78 with Tilt/Telescopic steering column.I have several repair manuals (Hayne's,Chilton's,etc.) and an Assembly Manual but none of the pictures match mine, they use generic and other models in the diagrams and pics.I am in the process of changing the interior color to Black from White and I have the steering wheel off but I'm not sure how to remove the two plastic pieces and the large "star" (not sure what they are for or called at this point) washers or spacers under them. They are 30 years old and probably brittle and I'm afraid to put much pressure on the plastic with a prying tool.Does anyone know where I can find a good schematic or diagram or even know what I should do to get access to the dimmer/turn signal switch?Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks, captna

Go to www.corvettefaq.com
Click on Jim Shea's Steering Papers
Click on Corvette Steering Papers
Scroll down to the section on Tilt & Telescoping Steering Columns
You will need to download the Disassembly & Repair Paper #1 and possibly #2 & #3. Also you will need D&R Pic #1, #2, & #3.

Thanks guys, the diagrams and pics at Jim Shea's Steering Papers match my steering column and have given me the steps to take to fix it now.I have a long way to go as the owners before me didn't take good care of this '78 L82 but I have most of the parts here already just a matter of putting it back together and then repaint the outside. Thanks Again, captna

I may have a problem before I start.I have bought a lockplate remover from Autozone and it only measures 2 and 5/8 inches across the width of the tool and the one that is showing how to make a tool in Jim Shea's articles is showing 3 and 1/2 inches across the width. Can you tell me if I need to exchange it and get the wider width tool? This is the only one that Autozone carries but I can go to other suppliers.I did look up online at Autozone and it showed a different part number than the one I bought at the store but at the same time the online did not sell it either,go figure.
