Default Tach problem

I have a 70 vert, small block. The tack stopped working the other day, then did a little bouncing and now appears to be working again. Loose wiring, ground ? Where do I start and what to look for - Thanks !

Its a mechanically driven tach.
Cable runs from the distributor to the tach head.
Pull cable out and lube it see if that helps first

Generally not the tach head. Usually the cable or most of the time it is the gear(s) in the dist that get eaten up. If that is the case you will need to remove the dist. and replace the gears. Try the cable first.

Same thing just happened to my 72, but mine simply quit! It is probably the tach drive gear at the distributor, and damage may go further into the gear in distributor from what I'm told. If you remove the tach cable from the dist. then remove the brass fitting the drive gear will slide out. You can then check for metal pieces or a worn gear. You can spin the end of the cable while watching the tach to see if it moves.

Hope this helps,
WB

You guys type pretty fast!!!!!!!!!!
