Default Show me photos of HEI distributor..how do I run these plug wires??

Since HEI cap plugs are "recessed" unlike standard points distributors, where the plug wires pretty much go in vertically...I'm trying to figure out how best to orient the 8 boots around the HEI distributor. Trying to get a clean, professional look, but I'm at a loss. Need to get it figured out before I start cutting wires..

If you have a picture of your engine bay with HEI distributor, please give me some ideas on how to do this.

Thanks. Hope this isnt confusing.

I prefer the look of the wires with a Crossfire cap. You can arrange the plugs per side in a row.

I have one on my Vette and we put one on Curt's. Very clean look because the they are arranged per back and front to back just like the cylinders.

I really like that look. Wonder of its available locally?? Speed shop??

Note...Hey Matt, I did a Google search on that cap, and there weren't alot of good things said about it, that alot of guys experienced "crossfiring"...pun intended. This from various other sites...Camaro, etc..

Have you had good luck with your???

Thanks.

I just upgraded mine to HEI using a ProComp Tach drive unit. #2 and #3 have to cross, everything else is straight out.

So your number 1 post is right above the vacuum advance canister?? Just want to make sure I have my distributor mounted correctly...

EDIT....I see now that you have #1 post pointing to the #1 cylinder. Guess that is correct, as I checked the original engine I have stored that still has the old distributor and wires, and #1 post is oriented towards the #1 cylinder. I was going off a diagram in the AIM that has #1 post to the right of FWD (ie pointing at the #4 cylinder) and it shows the to "forwardmost" posts to be #2 and #7. Its page 6-B6, Spark Plug Wiring, Shields and Coils... in my AIM.

I know that I can orient #1 post anywhere, but is towards the #1 cylinder conventional?? Why the diagram in the AIM??

Somebody unscrew me here!!

Why dont you use the original distributor shield and vertical wire shields and run your wires the down the back and under your exhaust manifolds? thats what I did and it really looks clean and organized.

Actually I have thought about that. My shields are complete but have spots of rust. I will probably have them re-chromed along with all the other bits and pieces. That would look nice.

Your AIM is correct for a point fired unit. However for HEI they are configured like I have mine per the below. If you buy a wire kit cut for a 75 or later vette they will run underneath like stock and the lenghts will be almost perfect using this pattern.

I could have gotten away without cutting the back side of the shield between the two dots and the green outline. But since it was a "Really" tight fit I decided to do so.It will make it easier to install back on anytime I need to take off.I cutted about 1/4" below the top.

thanks redcruz1120. And sorry MakoShark72 if I hijacked your thread. But I thought it could benefit all who were making the HEI conversion and wanted to keep the original shielding.
