Default Windshield adhesive/sealant removal?

As the title says, are there any good products out there that will help remove the tar-like adhesive or sealant that is used to mount the windshield? I tried a wire wheel, but it just gums up.

Scrape as much off as you can then 3M makes an adhesive remover...I'm doing mine right now...seems like you'll never get it all off. As a less expensive alternative, I've used both acetone or lacquer thinner with good results....ventilation!!!

I also just did this 2 days ago. I used a propane torch in one hand and a wire brush in the other. The tar stuff softens and comes right out and doesn't gum up the brush. I also used it on the old weatherstripping remnants. The torch burns it ands it scrapes right out. I removed every bit of tar and weatherstripping in literally a half hour. No problem believe me. If you don't have a torch you can get it at any hardware store for $20. It is used for copper plumbing.

OR - use a hair dryer to soften the bigger stuff and scrape off. Then lacquor thinner for final cleaning. Hair dryer is also good for getting rid of road tar on the bottom sides of the Vette. (OK -so I'm cheap)

After reading the suggestion to use a small torch, I went out and tried it. AWESOME!!! Just a little heat dries out the goo and it comes right off! Wish I had read about it sooner!!!

I get so much help on the forum that I appreciate, every chance I get to return the favor I do. That's what it's all about! Glad I could help.

i use 3m general purpose adhesive cleaner. it is an aromatic so you need lots of ventilation. it won't harm plastics, paint, or rubber.
