My Corvette @ GM's 100th
I posted some of this on the C5 Z06 Boards but wanted to share some of the GM Heritage Center event with my C3 brothers.
Some of you know my 2004 Z06/Z16 was selected by the NCM to represent the 2004 car on the Historic Motorama II, one Corvette from each year traveling from BG to Detriot for GM's 100th. We weathered what was left of Gustov and then along came Ike...over 10 inches of rain was very tough on the older Corvettes.
We made it home safe and sound yesterday. I added a few photo's to the gallery but thought I'd share a few here. Click the link above to view others.
GM hosted us for dinner at the Heritage Center...that's me beside the Mako Shark and Manta Ray. Lighting in the Heritage Center was tricky to work with...
At GM's 100th Celebration they decided to display the cars on the road between the GM building and the river with exception to "book end" vettes; the first and last year of each generation. These cars became the center piece of the display and were called the Fountain Cars as we were displayed along the fountain by the river...thankfully the fountain was turned off!
We had to be in place by 0530 - sucked but I was able to get a great sunrise pic! Anyone that says I need to lower my car has not driven on Detroit's roads...OMG! Worst roads ever and I've driven in Mogadishu Somalia!
The street side of the display.
The river side of the display.
Here's our club's flag - Vets with Vettes - flying high; I had to take it down before the area was open to the public but it flew just the same. That's Windsor Canada in the background.
My 12 year old daughter Abby rode with me on the trip and got to sit in the 1953 car.
Z06/Z16 #165 with the great-grandmother of them all.
A classic Z16 pose - love those stripes.
We met Bob Lutz just prior to the unveiling of the Volt.
We stopped by the NCM on the way home today. Hendrick's Motorsports was taking delivery of a few ZR-1's as a gift to the team.
As luck would have it we ran into Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon.
This is Jeff Gordon's ZR1 parked near our Club Crest at the NCM...sure glad Abby and I decided to stop by the museum!

Excellent story. Sounds like it was a good time for both of you. I could make a million trips like that and never run into the folks you ran into nor have that much fun. She will never forget that trip. Great job!!! Great story!!! Great pics!!!

Thanks for posting! Nice stop at the NCM!! So those guys made a special trip to Bowling Green to take delivery of the ZR1s? very nice! I will have to look out for those vettes around town. What do they call that color?

bringing this back up to the top so everyone gets a chance to see it. I mean, being part of the motorama and visiting GM and meeting Bob Lutz is really cool and all (yawn.. ) but I cannot believe you met Jimmie Johnson AND Jeff Gordon picking up their ZR1s at the NCM!!! It doesn't get any better than that!!!

Yes, I'm still talking about the trip to anyone that will listen .
Funny story, I could spot Jeff Gordon but to be honest I had no clue what Jimmie Johnson looked like. Other than museum staff and Hendrick's people there were only 6 other "fans" there; I had to wait for someone else to ask Jimmie for a photo so that I knew who to ask to pose with my daughter
I've added a few more pictures to the gallery (link in first post above) but wanted to share a couple from the GM Powertrain Build Center Tour at Wixom. This was a neat behind the scenes look at the build of the LS7 and LS9. These motors are hand assembled, one at a time by one person
But my favorite pictures are of the Crossfire Injected Display (L83) in the Heritage Room of the center. I felt compelled to tell them that their display was incorrect -the Crossfire started life powering the last generation shark in 1982 not the 84 as displayed!

Is that the rare engine made out of pinecones?? The CROSS-FIR? sorry....
Thanks for the additional pics. I will be on the lookout for those ZR1s. Lots of NASCAR drivers live around these parts.
