Default 1977 A/C Compressor - R4 Radial or A6 Axial??

I need some expert advice please.

I have an NOS A6 Axial A/C Compressor part number 12300272 that my GM parts book says is for a 1977 Corvette.

I thought they switched to the smaller Radial compressor in lete 1976?!?!?

Is this a situation where depending on what day or month your car was built, it could have come either way? According to AC Delco's website, they offer both the radial and the axial compressor.

What is going on here??? TIA!!!

'76L-'82 C3 all use the R4 compressor. I had a '77 and a '79 Bonneville with an A6.

That's what I thought too, until I read my GM parts book. My AIM even shows pictures of both. The parts book, including Corvette Central, show Axial hose kits from 74-77 and Radial Hose kits from 76-82.

Too confusing.

My guess is that since 76 and 77 cars have a lot of parts that are "early" and "late", they could come either way.

If memory serves, the switch to the R4 occurred during the '76 production run. Early '76s got the A6 compressors; later cars got the R4s. I was thinking all 77-82s got the R4s.

My 1982 Corvette parts books lists the 272 as '77 second design.

Screwy.

I have an early build 1977 (number 4966 built in Oct, 76), and it is an R4.

That's what mine says...hence my confusion!!! My parts book lists hoses and brackets for 1977 with Axial Compressors as well!!

Who has a 77 with an Axial Compressor???
